Freehold Township has well-maintained schools to house our pre-K through eighth-grade students, but upgrades are needed to increase the health, safety and security of our schools and to protect the community’s investment in our buildings.
Proposed improvements that would benefit all eight schools total $135.5 million with nearly every project qualifying for state aid that would cover up to 40% of the eligible costs. In Freehold Township's case, that is approximately $45 million. This aid is only received through a voter approved referendum and would reduce the local share.
What do the categories include?
Critical MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, & Plumbing) Upgrades includes HVAC, controls, plumbing, electrical upgrades and all associated architectural work
Security & Life Safety Upgrades includes interior doors and security hardware, permanent walls and doors with security hardware in the pods, camera installation, fire alarm system upgrades and ADA upgrades
Building Envelope Upgrades includes roofing upgrades, exterior door replacement with security hardware, window replacement and exterior stair upgrades
Add a secure entry vestibule at every school for another layer of security
Install additional surveillance cameras at various access points throughout the facilities to better monitor building safety
Replace fire alarm systems that are difficult to find parts for and expensive to repair
Replace exterior and interior doors, and security hardware, to enhance safety
Install permanent walls and doors, with security hardware, at classrooms in the Errickson and Applegate School pods for improved privacy and security
Replacing exterior stairs at the Early Childhood Learning Center
Upgrade the existing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to improve air quality, reduce the risk for unexpected repairs, and enhance energy efficiency and comfort for staff members and students
Replacement parts for classroom HVAC units are no longer manufactured, so they are nearly impossible to find
Upgrade electrical equipment, where needed, to support infrastructure updates
Upgrade aging roofing systems, which would resolve leaks and boost energy efficiency
Replace outdated windows at the ECLC to increase energy efficiency
Reconfigure the front office areas at schools to accommodate nurse’s suites with accessible restrooms and private exam rooms to meet current code requirements
Doors with security hardware in our classroom pods at Applegate and Errickson schools would increase security to keep our students and staff members safe. The common area would be maintained for collaborative activities. Students would have the same strong sense of community and collaboration that our staff members create each day.
Some of the classrooms at Applegate and Errickson Schools are arranged in an open space where each class has a designated room around the perimeter with a common area in the middle. These areas, called classroom pods, do not have doors to separate the classrooms from the common area. While they create a community feeling, the walls are not made of permanent material and the lack of doors makes it difficult to participate in proper lockdown drills. Adding doors and solid walls to the entrances of these classroom spaces would enhance security in this area of the school. The shared common space would be maintained.
