Production:
The tip of the tongue is raised to contact the alveolar ridge (behind your teeth, but not touching your teeth). The relaxed sides of the tongue do not contact the upper teeth. The voiced air stream is directed outward over the sides of the tongue. To tell if the sound made is "voiced", place your hand on the throat lightly and feel for a vibration.

- Show your child the correct tongue placement and movement:
- Lightly brush behind the top teeth (the spot) with the tip of a tongue depressor, and ask him to put his tongue tip on that spot and then to say /la/. Be sure to monitor the forward positioning of the tip of the tongue so that the tip of the tongue is contacting right behind the top teeth.
- Dampen the end of a cotton swab and rub the cotton portion over flavored hard candy; then touch the spot right behind the top teeth with the swab to have him “taste” the correct placement.
- As a variation of the above, apply a sticky food or use a lollipop to touch the spot; or place a small piece of hard candy on the spot behind the top teeth. Be sure not to use a food that may cause an allergic reaction.
- Have the client practice raising and lowering the tongue tip first slowly and then faster to the alveolar ridge. Make sure his mouth is open wide so that you can check placement.
- Instruct the client to place one hand on your throat as you say / l / to feel voicing.
