Let's Get Reading!!
READING
In Kindergarten, the children will learn and practice reading strategies through various activities.
Read Alouds, Shared Reading, Poems/Songs
The children are exposed to read alouds, shared reading experiences, and poems/songs throughout the day. The children will collect the poems/songs that they learn throughout the year in their journals.
Reading Workshop
We focus on strategies to help the children become better readers, comprehend what they have read, and understand the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts. We begin by developing the students reading habits and move toward teaching strategies to decode unknown words, retell stories, and make connections.
Guided Reading
The students will work with the teacher in a small group to develop skills/strategies using texts on their level. For additional practice, students will bring the book that was used in the reading group home with them. Students are assessed frequently throughout the year. Groupings are flexible and changes are made as necessary.
Literacy Centers
Literacy centers allow students to practice and apply skills/strategies that have been taught during whole group instruction. These centers take place during guided reading while the teacher is meeting with a small group.
