The Oboe Family including Historical and World Instruments

The oboe family, both historical and current, encompasses a wide variety of tone colours and performance traditions that can be interesting and informing to current oboe players.

The modern performance of historical compositions is enriched by hearing performances with what we believe to be authentic original instruments and performance practices. The tone color of the early oboe is believed to have been softer, more unfocused, perhaps more uneven, and the articulation more gentle and more separate, allowing for a different, more intimate style than generally heard from the more powerful modern instruments.

Performers of new works inspired by the sounds of world folk oboe family members also benefit from hearing the original instrument performing its traditional music.
