As per Township of Franklin district’s initiatives, as a normal classroom practice, there will be a focus on reteaching and reassessing proficiency on learning goals. When appropriate, students will be given second (or more) chances to demonstrate what they know, understand, and can do on varied methods of assessments. Think about the first time you tried to ride a bicycle, were you successful? Standards based grading makes allowances for the fact that what a student doesn’t know well at the beginning of the trimester, he or she may know by the end of it.
Grades will be determined by the student’s most consistent level of achievement, with emphasis on more recent evidence. Final grades will not be determined by averaging the grades from several grading periods. More recent information almost always provides a more accurate picture of student achievement. The mindset used for recording grades will be “Grade in pencil”!
How will my child be assessed?
A variety of formative and summative assessments will be used such as: student participation, teacher observation, student work samples, unit assessments, Common Formative Assessments, DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills), exit tickets (students show what they know at the end of a lesson), and i-Ready progress (the learner-responsive computer program we use for ELA and Math), etc.
What can I expect to see on the report cards?
The Township of Franklin uses a Standards Based Grading report card. Your child will be assessed for a standard, and will receive a grade based on the following performance level rubric:
E: Excels; excels at grade level standard for trimester
M: Meets grade level standard for trimester
P: Progressing toward grade level standard for trimester
N: Needs improvement; demonstrating minimal progress and at risk of not meeting grade level standard
I: Insufficient evidence: not enough evidence to determine a performance level
X: Indication of modified instruction and/or work
