ELD is an acronym for “English Language Development.” The first lesson I typically teach is about the meaning of this term.
English is the primary language of instruction in the Franklin Public Schools. Language is a systematic, agreed upon method of communicating ideas and emotions. Development refers to the growth or change in something.
ELD is the term I use to refer to the program my students are enrolled in, the department in which I work, and the classes that I teach. You may have heard the term “ESL.” ESL and ELD are essentially the same. ESL stands for “English as a Second Language.” Because English may be the third, or even fourth, or fifth!) language that a student may speak, we do not use the term ESL. English Language Development is a more accurate reflection of what I teach!
