Accelerated Reader

What is AR (Accelerated Reader)?

Each student’s most recent MAP Reading score is used to determine their reading level. Once the reading level is determined, each student is given a reading range. You will notice that the reading range is slightly below the student's reading level in order to insure the student's comfort level while reading is appropriate. Students will then be allowed to check out books in their reading range over which they may test. Each student will have an individualized goal based on his/her reading level. The reading level will dictate how many points your student will need to obtain each six weeks.

How will AR affect my student's grade?

Each student will receive two scores for AR over a 6 week period. One score worth 100 points will come from how many points the student earns based on his/her goals. The second 100 points will come from his/her comprehension of the book as shown by a computerized test. The AR scores will become half of the student's Language Arts homework grade.

What is a Reading Conference Sheet?

The Reading Conference Sheet used in 7th & 8th grade Language Arts classes is an AR homework assignment which has a fiction and a nonfiction side with questions aligned to the standards. At least one conference sheet (fiction or nonfiction) must be completed and turned in every six weeks (mid-term & trimester end). This is used in place of the basic log and as a conversation tool for teacher reading conference times which promote and encourage reading. The goal is for each student to confer with their teacher at least once per 6 weeks. When your student reads for their nightly homework, they should add information to the conference sheet.
