Steps When Applying To College

  1. Make Decisions about how many and what colleges you will apply for admission.

  2. Apply to College Early (as early as summer before senior year).

  3. Determine who is the best person to ask to write you a letter of recommendation IF it is part of your application.

  4. Know your deadlines & communicate them to your recommender.

  5. Complete the FAFSA as early at Oct. 1st.

  6. Once you get your acceptances, decide where you will attend and let that college know no later than May 1st. Also let all other colleges know that you will not be attending.

College Planning

In October, November and December, Counselors meet with each junior and his/her parent(s) for an individual post high school planning conference.

In September, Counselors meet with all seniors, to distribute and discuss all
relevant information regarding post-secondary educational and scholarship planning.

Letter of Recommendation

You may or may not need a Letter of Recommendation for your college(s). Please check before you request one!

Students will use Xello when making a request to a teacher or school counselor. In that request, students need to attach their College & Career Readiness (CCR) Google Doc that has been developed since freshman year. The CCR doc will help us write the best possible letter for you.

College Board has a great article with tips about how to get a great Letter of Recommendation

  • Give references a minimum of 2 weeks notice.

  • Read your applications carefully, it may tell you WHO needs to write your letters.

  • Consider an academic teacher who knows your strengths.

  • Consider community members who know you well, especially for Scholarship Applications.

  • Give your writer information about you.

  • It's highly recommended that you waive your right to view recommendation forms on your application. You MUST do this on Common App if you want to be able to request your transcript or letter from a teacher on Xello.

  • Follow up with your Reference a week or so before recommendations are due.

  • Formally THANK your References.
