Job Shadowing on Pediatric Oncology/Hematology Unit at Connecticut Children's (12/03/2019)
Things I Experienced:
Observed chemotherapy being administered to a pediatric patient
Observed hickman catheter being utilized for treatment
Observed everyday tasks a nurse performs
Things I Learned:
Fertility
Prepubescent girls (Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation)
Prepubescent boys (Testicular Tissue Cryopreservation)
Post-pubertal girls (Oocyte/Embryo Cryopreservation)
Post-pubertal boys (Sperm Cryopreservation (banking), Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE))
Psychosocial
Patients come for a long time after being cancer-free to check up on everything (2 days a month for a year)
Psychologists talk to patients and parents and help refer parents to outside therapists
Child life specialist to help patients cope with their illness and help patients siblings
Use things within the hospital to help the patients feel better (ex/ I saw a therapy dog and clown's come on Monday's)
Palliative care
Hospice is only a small part in it
Used to comfort individuals throughout the process
Nurse thinks it should be introduced to almost every patient as soon as they are diagnosed
Clinic vs. In-patient
Patients come into clinics for medications but do not stay over night
In-patient patients stay overnight

Things I Experienced:
Observed diagnostic process for neuro-developmental disorders (i.e. ADHD, autism, depression, etc.)
Observed check ups for neurodevelopmental disorders
Observed practices in treating pediatric illness (i.e. cold for a baby, flu test, etc.)
Observed procedures for pediatric physical
Things I Learned:
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
mean/rude actions toward a professional (i.e. doctor) show the strength and severity of ODD
Distinction between Autism and ADHD
eye contact when speaking to an individual
focus on an object, person, or things occurring around the individual

Job Shadowing on Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Connecticut Children's (03/11/2020)
Things I Experienced:
Observed rotations done by Neonatologists and their staff
Observed practices taken by Neonatologist in daily check ups on patients
Observed daily procedures of a Neonatal Nurse
Things I Learned:
Heart Murmur
Sound of normal newborn heart beat versus sound of a heart murmur
Potential cause of heart murmur
Withdrawal Newborn
Signs and symptoms of a baby withdrawing from its mothers drug use
Distinctive cry of a newborn going through withdrawal
Type of staff
Roles each staff member has in caring for the babies
Occupational and Physical Therapist, Lactation Consultant, and Nutritionist
