Online Learning Opportunities

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the extended learning opportunities that have typically been available to students have been moved online. This page contains a running list of online extended learning opportunities that will be available to FHS students during the 2020-21 school year.

CT Science & Humanities Symposium

The Connecticut Junior Science and Humanities Symposium is designed to challenge and engage students (grades 9-12) in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers. The top five presenters at the CT-JSHS will be invited to attend the National Symposium April 14-17, 2021 in Boston, Massachusetts, fully paid for by JSHS. Scholarship awards totaling close to $40,000 are also offered. Learn more about the symposium at this website.

Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement offers a variety of resources for students related to financial literacy, work and career readiness, and entrepreneurship. These resources include videos, activities, and curricula. More information about these resources can be found at this link.

Data Visualization Poster Competition

The Connecticut chapter of the American Statistical Association will continue its annual K-12 Data Visualization Poster Competition this year in a virtual format. Winning schools and students will be awarded certificates as well as monetary prizes. In each category, the 1st place poster will receive $100, 2nd place poster will receive $75, and 3rd place poster $50 (monetary prizes are awarded per poster, not per individual for team entries). The deadline for submission is Friday, April 16, 2021. Please see this document for more information.

MO*MATH Math Communication Contest

Are you a high school student who wants to share your love of math with the world? Enter this worldwide contest! Cash prizes will be awarded for compelling math communication projects, and award-winning projects will be posted online. Projects should be suitable for sharing with a general audience and should inspire an interest in or appreciation of mathematics. A pair of students or a small team may collectively submit a project as long as each student is currently enrolled in high school and is between 15 and 18 years of age on September 1, 2020. Perry Virtual Experience

The Perry Virtual Experience is a free, 2.5-hour, interactive online experience for high school and college-aged women who are interested in pursuing careers in orthopaedics and/or engineering. Participants will hear from women leaders in these fields and dive into online mock orthopaedic surgery simulations and biomechanics experiments. Perry Outreach Program alumnae are welcome to register for a PVE session. You are welcome to register for any session that works for your schedule, and you can find those on our upcoming program calendar. Please only register for one session. Be Homeful Ambassadors Program

Be Homeful Ambassadors play an important role in efforts to end homelessness in Connecticut. The Ambassadors are a team of kids from across the state working together to learn about how homelessness affects local kids and take action to make sure no kid in your community has to become homeless. Virtual Manufacturing Career Fair

Students from Connecticut’s middle, high school, and college programs are invited to explore manufacturing through virtual tours, interactive activities, and games. The virtual fair will provide manufacturers an opportunity to showcase their work and students a chance to learn about future career paths. Students will have an opportunity to participate in virtual tours of local manufacturing facilities. More information about this virtual fair can be found on this page.

Girls With Impact

Designed with Harvard experts, Girls With Impact is a unique program for ALL girls ages 12 – 18, equipping them with skills, confidence and entrepreneurship that set them apart when it comes to their future success and college resume. The 10-week Academy is offered fully online, and the next session begins October 5th. Education Reimagined

Education Reimagined has pulled together links to a variety of resources to support students' learning from home. Linked to this page are learning opportunities related to civics, filmmaking, science, the foundations of coding, and social and emotional well-being, among many others. If you are looking for ways to keep active and continue learning during Connected Learning, this page is a great resource to explore.

"Day in the Life" Videos

Below are a variety of "day in the life" videos that offer students a glimpse into the work lives of professionals in different career fields. These videos are good substitutes for the job shadow programming that the Career Center typically offers. If there is a job that interests you that isn't in the list of videos, please email Mr. Netcoh (netcohs@fpsct.org), and he will do his best to find a video for that occupation and upload it here.

Linking Resources

The "Day in the Life" videos might be great on their own but are even better when linked with other information (e.g., the education you need to get certain jobs, how much money you will make in that job, etc.). The brief video to the left shows how you can use the "Day in the Life" videos in combination with the Occupational Outlook Handbook below to learn even more about different jobs that interest you.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a resource published by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics that provides valuable information about a variety of occupations in the United States, including descriptions of working conditions, required education and training, wages, and job outlook. The Occupational Outlook Handbook can be accessed here.

The Connecticut Department of Labor offers a variety of resources to help students learn about different careers and the labor market in Connecticut. This video provides a brief orientation to the site.

Khan Academy has a variety of career videos focused on the questions of "What do I do? How much do I make? How did I get my job? Where am I going?" Scroll down after clicking on this link to find videos grouped by different career categories.

Many FHS students may be familiar with Naviance as a tool for college planning. This platform also has a variety of resources that students can use to explore jobs and career pathways that may be of interest. The video to the left provides a brief orientation to the career resources offered within Naviance.

Career Cruising is another resource that FHS students can access for the purpose of career exploration. The video to the left provides a brief orientation to the site. Students who are interested in using Career Cruising need to email Mr. Netcoh (netcohs@fpsct.org) for the school's login information.

Manufacturing Careers Info

According to the National Association of Manufacturers Manufacturing Institute, "In the next 10 years, 4.6 million U.S. jobs will be open in manufacturing, but only 2.2 million jobs will be filled." Today's manufacturing jobs are not like those of 20-30 years ago. They require workers with deep knowledge and specialized skills in STEM. Learn more about careers in manufacturing here and here.

This portal contains videos and student activations focusing on the STEM skills, knowledge, and interests needed to pursue exciting careers in the STEM industry. Use this link to learn about careers ranging from AI researcher to environmental health and safety worker.
