Newsletter - 26th May 2023
With such a busy start to the Summer Term, the weeks have flown by and already half term is upon us. And, as you will see from this edition of our newsletter, everyone has been very busy learning indeed!
This week, we revealed some exciting plans to develop our Log Park area within the main playground during our Head of School Assembly. Take a look below for more information - and the proposed design! As mentioned in our previous newsletter, with the help of our School Council Team, our children have already been involved in helping choose a selection of outdoor musical instruments to further develop creative play outside as part of this project. The next phase will be to ask the children to vote for which pieces of Trim Trail equipment they would like to have in the Log Park area... Costing just over £20,000 in total, the proposed Log Park development is our priority for fundraising this year. To that end, money raised by our fantastic FPSA will go towards funding this project. So, with the Summer Fair - our biggest fundraising event of the year - only a few weeks away, we are hoping that our children, families and wider community will all be able to help us to raise as much as we possibly can. Please take a look below for more information about this event - and the ways in which you can get involved.
There is the promise of some lovely weather for the Bank Holiday and half term (fingers crossed!) So whatever your plans, I hope that you enjoy the break and I look forward to welcoming our children and families back to school for the final few weeks of this academic year on Monday 5th June.
With warmest wishes
Jane Indge
Head of School

This week, SAM - our School Attendance Mascot, is off to Year 2 as Holly Class has had the best attendance overall, with a fantastic 99.7%! Well done to all!
Our latest school attendance figures for each class are shown in the table. Our school attendance target is: 97%
Holly 99.7%
Caterpillar 99.0%
Dragonfly 99.0%
Oak 99.0%
Silver Birch 97.7%
Hazel 97.0%
Bumblebee 96.3%
Willow 93.0%
Beech 92.7%
Our Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies have had a wonderful time learning in our woodlands and enjoying the beautiful sunshine! We have been exploring and investigating and the children have learnt all about how to look after plants in our growing area. Look out for our plants as they begin to grow over the next term!
The Early Years have been showing off their super skills in our digging pit churning up the soil so it can be used for some yummy mud pie! They have learnt how to use rakes and spades effectively and have worked collaboratively as a team.
Over the past few weeks the children have explored three different shops to develop their mathematical understanding and language. We have had a shoe shop, fruit and vegetable market and a post office. This has supported discussions with the children around money, weight, size and buying and selling. Many of the children requested a debit card to make their purchase easier!
The Bumblebee, Caterpillar and Dragonfly children have been retelling the traditional tale 'The Gingerbread Man'. They have read and re-enacted the story, explored alternative endings and created their own carefully drawn story maps. Over the next few weeks our children will be 'having a go' at reading their very own story map of 'The Gingerbread Man' which we will share with you on Seesaw!
To explore the story further, our children had great fun using their senses to smell real ginger and other scents such as; mint, coffee, herbal teas, lemon and more! The children were able to share with their friends the scents that they liked and the scents that they disliked! After this, they were extremely excited to make their own Gingerbread Man. We worked together to weigh out and measure the ingredients that they needed. Then the children took turns to knead the dough and cut out their own gingerbread man biscuit. Much to the children's surprise, Miss Hare's Gingerbread Man ran off before she could eat him, so the children have been super busy creating 'WANTED' posters and letters to help find Miss Hare's Gingerbread Man!
This week, our Early Years children have been learning all about vehicles during our project time. They have been accessing the non-fiction books and technology to find out more information and exploring the mechanisms of how vehicles move. Following this, they created a carefully drawn plan of a vehicle they wanted to build. The next day, they used their plan to build some wonderful models using recycled materials, construction resources and crates. They learnt how to join and assemble and used various resources and techniques. It was great to see how some of the children adapted their original plans and the resilience that they showed when their models weren't going to plan! When reviewing our models many of them said how proud they were of their vehicles and also made lots of kind comments about each others creations.
On Monday the 15th May our Early Years children went on a school trip to Windsor as part of their learning this term about 'Journeys'. To prepare for the journey our Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies learnt about landmarks in our local area, map reading and different ways to travel. We begun our journey at school and boarded a coach with maps of the local area. The coach then took us on a journey around Maidenhead and we spotted local landmarks before travelling on to Windsor. We walked across Alexander Park and boarded our boat. Captain Sam took us on a trip down the Thames before returning to our starting point for lunch. The children excitedly talked about the places that they recognised and everyone had a fantastic day. Thank you to all the adults that helped make the day a success and our brilliant Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies who were all fantastic role models for our school.
What an exciting few weeks we have had. We have been inspired by the launch of the bird box and we are enjoying checking on the hatchlings and watching them feed and grow feathers. During busy learning some of the children have made their own bird boxes to take home while some of the children built a bird nest during outdoor learning using the fresh grass cuttings. We even tried to entice a bird to use the nest by collecting worms which we placed in a coconut shell next to the nest.
We have also been investigating what cress needs to grow and set up a fair test with the amount of water the plants got as the variable. We have happily concluded that too much water is just as bad as no water when growing plants.
We have continued learning about the different continents and we have enthusiastically been sharing our knowledge during busy learning through writing, drawing and craft activities. We have been excellent geographers and have used the resources in the reading area project box to research different animals and their adaptions and have been using the small world and block area to build various habitats.
We have continued to research interesting facts about the 5 oceans of the world using our class iPads and books to support us. We have also located them on a map and globe.
Following our exploration into J.M.W. Turner's technique and paintings and our research into the five layers of the ocean, we have created our own ocean themed artwork and we have also painted each layer of the ocean. We have thought carefully about the creatures that live in the ocean and represented them in our paintings.
We have been keeping an eye on the progress of our blue tits nesting in our bird box. It is so amazing to see how quickly they grow and develop. This has also inspired us to research other nest boxes too including peregrine falcons and ospreys too. It has been interested thinking about the different oceans that ospreys cross during their migration. Using this inspiration we have been using our newfound painting skills to create a range of nature themed artwork too!
This term we are focusing on the religion Islam in our RE lessons and Mrs Akhter kindly led an assembly on wudu to help us think about how Muslims most feel like they belong.
This week we have been focusing on our Inventor Sticky Knowledge and exploring different ways to join materials together to support us in our design, make and testing boats activity after half term. This included the flange, L brace, split pins, tape, glue, tabs and many more!
Lastly, as mathematicians we have been busy learning how to tell the time on an analogue clock. This has entailed us building our own representations of a clock and also thinking about the different periods of time throughout the day and night.
Last week we all took part in Walk to School Week to help us think about ways to keep our bodies healthy and to look after the planet too!
Each class collected data throughout the week about the different ways that we had travelled to school including walking, using a scooter, or cycling.
Each child had a Walk to School Week passport with a different daily activity to complete to make their journey to school exciting!
We finished the week by all wearing our trainers or walking shoes to school.
We have some exciting plans in progress to develop our Log Park area to make it an even better place for our children to enjoy. As well as updating and replacing some of the pieces of equipment that offer our children physical challenges, we have also been looking at how we can incorporate opportunities for creative play - through music and art, as well as offering a quieter, cosy space to gather, talk and play with friends.
As shown in the image above, (with our existing equipment in white) the proposed design includes:
Trim trail equipment - individual items to be chosen by the children
'Get, set, go' equipment - moveable blocks that offer open-ended active play
Learning den - a cosy, quieter place to talk and play with friends
Outdoor musical instruments - our children have asked for Freestanding Chimes, Group Batonka and Drum Seats
Creative panels - giant chalkboard and whiteboard; large-scale weaving panel
The FPSA are raising much needed funds to help us with this ambitious project - we will keep you updated as to our progress!
We are delighted to let you know that Mrs Trillow has given birth to a beautiful little girl.
Elsie Violet arrived safe and well earlier this month and both mother and baby are doing well. I am sure you will join us all in sending our congratulations to Mrs Trillow and family - such happy news!
In nurture, we have continued being scientists with experiments involving water. We performed a 'Float or Sink?' experiment involving lots of different objects being dropped into a bowl of water. Some of the results were quite a surprise. Another experiment involved setting up a ring of Skittles sweets on a plate followed by adding some water to the middle and observing the colourful effects both soon and long after.
We had fun one afternoon last week, making some sandwiches. We chose either jam or marmite and best of all we got to eat them.
We are very proud of how well the plants in the front playground are looking, including sunflowers, peas, broad beans, carrots and beetroot, and we are extremely excited to see our first strawberries appear.
We were very excited to see that in our bird box we have chicks. We enjoyed closely observing the babies and trying to figure out how many there were. We noticed that the parents were flying out of the bird box to collect some food for their chicks. We then decided to go to the nature garden so we could see the adult birds coming and going and collecting food for their young. We had to be super quiet to make sure that we did not disturb the nest. It was such a lovely trip and we are looking forward to watching the chicks grow.
We have been very busy over the past few weeks designing and making posters for each of our classrooms to advertise about our upcoming Summer Fair! We thought carefully about how to make our posters eye-catching and the key information we wanted to share. So, keep a look out near each class for our Summer Fair posters, we hope they grab your attention!
Our resident author, Miss Roberts (Oak Class) will be at the Summer Fair ready and willing to sign any copies of her first book: Goose and Bear which is a beautiful tale of friendship suitable for ages 3-7.
She will have a limited number of copies available to purchase but to make sure you don't miss out, you can buy in advance direct from the publisher or from Amazon using the links below:

Every Friday, during our whole school Celebration Assembly, Head of School awards are given out to a child or children in each class. The certificates are presented by Mrs Indge to those children who have consistently demonstrated excellent behaviours for learning.
Miss Dexter pops on her Superhero cape each week during Celebration Assembly to present our SuperPoWeR awards. The awards are given to children who have been demonstrating excellent behaviour through our school values of Passion, Well being and Respect.
Every week, during our Head of School Assembly, a bingo ball is selected from our special red bag. The bingo balls are numbered 1 - 30. Each child in Year 1 and 2 with the corresponding register number to the ball chosen will have the opportunity to bring their Maths book and Project scrapbook to share with Mrs Indge, Miss Dexter and Miss Edmondson later that week. During the Book Bingo session, the children spend time looking through the books together with the adults, whilst discussing and explaining what they have been busy learning about.
Junior Discos
The Junior School discos were back with a bang last Friday. Mr King and Mr Sawle turned into DJ King and DJ Sawle for the 2 discos, playing some fabulous tunes for the children. There were even a few confetti cannons released at the end of the discos for added fun!
Both of the discos were well attended and we hope everyone had a good time. They raised over £1,500 for the Junior School so thank you to everyone who bought a ticket and supported them. Also, a huge thank you to the Juniors staff who stayed behind after school to help out with the discos.
Dates for your diary.....
Summer Fair - Saturday 17th June (11.30am - 2.30pm)
An important letter went out on Monday with details on how you can support the summer fair this year, please read through it carefully. In addition, every child came home with 2 cups which when filled will form the very popular 'Kids Tombola' stall which is usually run by Infants school staff. Filled tombola cups should be returned to school on Friday 9th June for which your child can wear non-uniform. Raffle tickets were also included (NB - more raffle tickets can be found at the Infants school office). Please buy and/or sell as many raffle tickets as you can.
Thank you to all of those that have signed up to have an Oakwood Estates board outside their house in the 2 weeks leading up to the fair. We had a great response which will result in ~£500 to the FPSA.
Please can you help at the fair on a stall? You (or your relatives) can volunteer for 1 hour or more on a variety of different stalls. Some of the stalls are suitable for your child/children to help out on too.
