We understand that juggling and balancing life’s demands may be particularly difficult at present. We would like to emphasise that any homework or content sent to you comes in the form of support and advice and you may take what suits your family. I know for some, getting to any work will be a difficult task. So, our advice is, education happens in lots of different ways, so don’t be hard on yourself or feel guilty if it’s not happening daily. Our children will bounce back from this and may indeed pick up other useful skills during these weeks.
I know that there can be apprehension regarding teaching your own child and parents can be concerned regarding whether they are doing things right, but remember this is your child and you know them better than anyone, trust your knowledge of your child. The importance is that you maintain a consistent approach in your interactions. In school, your child works with a whole team of staff members, each of those staff members will work slightly differently with your child. How they praise efforts and interact with your child will vary. As your child bonds with each staff member, their working relationship develops and it becomes predictable and familiar to the child. Once we are predictable in how we present work, praise effort and reinforce good behaviour you will begin to find it easier to do schoolwork with your child.
For many of our pupils doing school work at home will not be the normal and creating predictability and routine around home school activities will be half the battle. Remember routines do not fall into place overnight it takes a number of days and sometimes weeks of consistency before your child (and you!) will be familiar with the new routine.
I understand that this may be a particularly difficult time for our pupils and their families and am aware that distance or online learning may not suit our pupils as the majority of their education in school is delivered throughout the school day by slowly shaping behaviours and delivering tasks in a discreet way. In school, our staff use strategies to assist and monitor progress that may be difficult and time consuming to run in the home environment. So before you engage in home-school education, please note that :
I understand the difficulties that it may bring you
I have no expectation on parents to deliver educational programmes at home
I know that education always begins at home with the parents so continuing to keep your child safe and happy is more than enough in these times
We all hope that your child will be safely back in school soon and, no matter what place they are in, our staff will work hard to get them back on track to the best of our, and your child's abilities.
