Animal Science is a dynamic and hands on class at Foxcroft which covers an introduction to the following topics:
Common and Comparative Anatomy
Digestion and Nutrition
Wildlife Rehabilitation
Common Injuries and Illness
After learning about common and shared anatomy among all animals, students had the opportunity to learn about a particular animal of interest. During the Adaptations Project, students researched the unique adaptations to the skeletal, skin, and digestive systems of their animal and how those differences helped the animal survive. Students portrayed their findings in a final project created in TIL@FXC.
This fall, the entire community enjoyed a visit from Blue Ridge Wildlife Center, to learn about some of the wildlife native to Virginia. After the presentation during morning meeting, the speaker stayed to speak with Animal Science about careers in wildlife rehab, and the specific work they do at BRWC.
Pictured to the right are Loren S. and Carsyn B. feeding two orphaned mice who were rescued right here at Foxcroft during our Wildlife Rehabilitation unit. These mice, affectionately names Alvin and Theodore, visited class before being transported to BRWC.
Sophomore Chloe M. and Senior Kayla L. Interned at BRWC over Wintermission. While there, they observed surgeries, prepared meals and fed recovering wildlife, and provided other assistance to the rehabilitation of these animals.
Students met at the Foxcroft Barn to practice taking Temperature, Pulse, and Respiration on the school lesson ponies.
