What Happens In Room Three, Stays In Room Three

When entering into my room, I find a space filled with music and laughs so cheerful they can be heard down the hall, pillows and blankets in crazy stacks on the floor, and a sweet smell of perfume. While standing on a fuzzy carpet underneath my feet, I notice five desks set up around the room, two sharing a wall on either side and one in front of me. Looking down with a smile, I find my roommates lying on the floor with colorful blankets, excitedly talking about new experiences that have happened throughout the day. To the right I look to my desk with my laptop sitting in the center, marking its place with nothing around it. Above my desk sits a shelf holding the controlled chaos of laundry detergent, a giant “L” decoration, and an empty grocery bag. Two frames with pictures of groups of people sit proudly on the shelf displaying my closest friends and reminding me of all our amazing memories. I stand there knowing that soon I will have just as many memories with my roommates. The other desks, holding their own controlled chaos, a very tidy desk holding a ukulele, a desk with tons of makeup on top, my roommates' notebooks stacked in piles all over her desk, and a messy desk with a mug and a shoe scattered about. My room, never quiet, always has snacks that melt in your mouth, and may have an ant or two on the ground or a bad patch job in the ceiling, yet I feel a sense of home when I sit on a couple pillows listening to rap and smelling Camillia’s ramen from the night before.

While writing this paragraph I learned that I love to write using all my senses. It made me really think about small detail and how I felt while in my room. I also learned that I need to work on my comma placement, because I am still awful at them even after all this time. In the future I want to work more on making my sentences as interesting as they can be and grab the reader more. Overall, I loved writing this paragraph and picking apart my room in the process.

Floods: What Are They Good For?

Ancient literature usually tells a story of how something was created or answers the question of why. These stories show different views of why people live they way they do. Since the gods view themselves as superior, they wish to fix the problem. The gods feel their worlds are becoming wicked. In each story the gods thought creating a flood would wipe out all the unwanted people. In the ancient flood myth, Zeus’ brother sent a flood while God from the bible and the greater gods sent floods themselves. Zeus and God sees that mankind was wicked while Enili brings the idea of mankind being wicked to the greater god’s attention to do something about it. Zeus wants to destroy them while Enili wanted to bring peace to themselves and others. God from the bible, wants to destroy the evil from mankind but, saves one man, Noah. Zeus only sees the gods and himself as deserving of power and living:“All over earth men grew so wicked that finally Zeus determined to destroy the. He decided” (Hamilton 76). God from the bible is more interested in the better of his civilization. These stories coney the lesson that one should not disobey the gods, yet people warn others of this flood coming their way. Prometheus cautioned Enili to build a chest to protect his son and niece. Ea comes to Enlil in a dream to: “tear down your house, I say, and build a boat” (The Epic of Gilgamesh) this dream is the warning sign of the people in society. Zeus, God from the bible, Enili show different ways of solving the same problem.

I struggled while writing this paragraph, my paragraph required a lot of revision. I worked hard while revising it and put as much effort in as I did the first time. This paragraph threw me out of my writing comfort zone, but I still worked hard. I now know that I need to work on my sentence structure and giving more detail while comparing. Next time I will work harder on paying closer attention to the structure of my over all paragraph.

Dinosaurs Will Never Go Out Of Style

Growing up I have been taught to give compliments, smile, and wave. It was not until this year that I realized I am giving back to my community. Giving to others in the smallest ways is more rewarding than anything. Being a student aide in a summer school classroom where the kids come to summer school to get breakfast and lunch for the day taught me a thing or two about giving in unique ways.

A couple years ago a young boy was sitting on the mulch at recess. Children running in and out of the swings, teachers talking about their evening plans, and a girl watching the boy sitting on the mulch thinking to herself why the boy was not playing with everyone else. The young girl whose mom runs a daycare and whose dad works three jobs, sat next to the boy. The boy never thought to look over at the girl until the girl said, “I really like your sweatshirt. Dinosaurs are really never going to go out of style” and the conversation of dinosaurs being in or out began.

The following day, the little boy who was told that his sweatshirt was still in style ran around the playground roaring like a dinosaur inviting everyone to join in on the craziness that was the first grade playground that day.

Now, I do not know what the little girl said to the boy, I doubt they care if dinosaurs will ever go out of style, but that day will always have an impact on me. Seeing the little girl walk over to the boy to give him the inspiration to be the scariest dinosaur the next day was something I will never forget. Watching the little kids give to other who do not have much makes me want to give to everyone a little bit more. The kids running around the playground do not know they are making such an amazing impact by giving in little doses. As an older kid, we need to listen to younger kids and remember to be as selfless as they are. Little kids give everyday in the smallest ways that change who they are. I will always remember such an impactful conversation between two tiny kids that changed the way I give back to others.

Character Analysis

Harper Lee writes Scout to become a strong woman by showing how others view her, how she views herself, and her use of dialogue. Scout does not view herself as an average southern bell, she enjoys playing with her older brother, Jem, and friend Dill. The three children get int lots of trouble together while playing in the yard and running around. Scout seems to be getting herself into more trouble because of the way she runs her mouth and the words she chooses. Although Scout may not always say the most ladylike thing; she always has an opinion to share and find a way to tell anyone who will listen. Scout proves her actions are very thought out, which shows her intelligence and mature instinct. Being taught to read at a very young age, helps Scout as she advances in her education. Since Scout is so young, her innocence shows after Jem cuts all of Mrs.Dubose’s flowers: “We sulked around the kitchen until Calpurnia threw us out. By some voodoo system Calpurnia seemed to know all about it” (Lee 137). Scout shows her innocence by sulking around and having a bad attitude about what Jem had done with the flowers, yet she shows her maturity by feeling guilt for Jem even though she did not touch the flowers. Her mannerisms and language are unlike any other six-year-olds. Scout has a brilliant understanding of books and school, yet she struggles applying them to reality “ Yeah. Don’t say anything yet, but we’re gonna get married as soon as we’re big enough. He asked me last summer” (Lee 109). Scout and Dill will most likely not get married, but Scout’s innocent mind continues to take over. By showing her bravery, Scout fights boys on the playground with no fear. With intentions of helping in the right way, Scout sometimes let her actions get the best of her, for example when Scout beat up her cousin, when Scout should of talked about it with him. Scout grows each chapter, this is shown by how she handles herself with others “I took a deep breath. ‘Well, in the first place you never stopped to gimme a chance to tell you my side of it…” (Lee 113), by saying this Scout is showing that she knows she has something important to say and feels that it is worth sharing. Scout is always curious to learn new things.Scout is a strong character even at such a young age. Scout does not fail to stay true to her younger self and is very self aware of how she acts even as such a young girl.

While writing this essay, I learned how to write and put citations in. I struggled a lot with analyzing the text from the book and I hope to improve it. I also struggled with comma placement and punctuation.
