All About Dragons
By: Adina (3rd grader)
I dedicate this essay to Tui T. Sutherland for being the best author!!! You should read her famous Wings of Fire series!
Dragons are some of the strongest creatures of mythology. Their powers are a pretty big part of their strength too. They are very, very, very strong.
I will talk about their lives.
First, dragons are born in a place that doesn't mess up the hatching process, like a hatchery! Then, when they are a certain temperature they will hatch (unless they don’t need to be a certain temperature). They make little squeaky sounds, like chirps and gurgles!
Second, when they are kids they start practicing to fight and maybe fly. They also might start hunting tiny things, like mice. They go to school too! They play first to pin games (unless they don’t do that in their kind).
Next, let's learn about what teenage dragons do. Teenage dragons learn to fight big animals like caribou. They have a pretty unlikely chance of getting a job. They also play first to pin, but more serious. They definitely have learned to fly already.
When they are adults they have a very likely chance of getting a job! They might hunt in a group or with a partner or just plain alone. They might even get to be a queen/king!
Now lets learn about dragon personalities.
If you see an angry dragon (unless it’s super duper, mega, ultra friendly) the main goal isssssss… run, run to a safe place you can hide (doesn't matter too much if it's a herbivore). If there’s a small, angry dragon, get to a high hiding place with a quick exit and put some big rocks, or anything like rocks as long as it’s big, as obstacles. It probably will get tired and give up before you put big stuff in the way to your exit.
If there’s a sad dragon, you should risk going to the dragon and try to comfort it, you might get a dragon friend, oorrrrrrr… you might die. When there’s a small, sad dragon, you can snuggle it and a sad small dragon doesn't have a big chance of killing you. And you have a bigger chance of a dragon buddie.
When there’s a happy dragon, it could possibly eat you because it’s happy, or not. If there’s a small, happy dragon, it probably won’t try to kill you cause it’s tiny and it might take a long time.
Here’s a tip: Your feelings should be like a dragon’s, so think about what you feel like. (Also feel free to think about how dragons feel.) ~Hehe
Now let’s learn about dragon rivals!
If there was a dragon battle near you there should be screeches, really loud pounding noises if they‘re in the air, maybe flamethrower noises or like swooshy things. You also might hear scrapey sounds because of their scales. There might be dragon types that are allied with other dragon types. A dragon type might sneak attack on an enemy or go to their base, possibly the other way around. Or they could have portal powers. Dragons don’t really use weapons, they use all their strength and power to try and defeat the other dragon type. They might try to kill all of the other kind of dragons they are fighting, or they all die, or they don’t die but are defeated, or the other guys are defeated but not dead. A dragon war isn't World War 2, the warriors fight against each other or they decide to have peace. It depends on how good dragons are at fighting and how good their powers are if they know how to use them in the best ways possible. Every size has its own advantage to fighting.
Well, that’s a good amount of info for you/you people. You’ve learned a lot about my favorite animals! They are very powerful!
The Ladder
By: Jackson (5th Grader)
The mist and fog blocks my view as I am walking around my farm looking for my dad’s cattle. But all of a sudden, I see something very unusual…
“In the 5 years I have lived in Northern Saskatchewan,” I tell my father, Farmer Wixburn,”I have never seen a LADDER that extends into the clouds!!”
My father just chuckles and says, “Whatever you say my boy!”
“No one ever listens to me!” I mutter to myself.
But, when I tell my mom, she walks out onto the muddy field to investigate the scene.
“Oh my goodness!!” my mother screams.
I start to climb the ladder, as I climb higher and higher my mom yells, “Stop Kazar!”
But I can’t hear her anymore.... As I continue climbing, my view of the Hanson farm gets worse and worse. The clouds fog up my once clear glasses. The very cold air made my face feel cold, and even though I had a jacket on, I was freezing.
At last, I see a light and the top of the ladder. “A whole new world!” I think to myself.
But right when I start to enjoy the unfamiliar piece of land, the ladder disappears. The questions are already running through my head, “Should I jump off the island?”, “Should I look around?”, “What will I eat or drink?” and “How long have I been gone?” I eventually jumped to the conclusion that I should look around the floating piece of land to search for food, water, and a way to get home.
As I start walking around the island I see a sign of hope, a person, “Maybe they could help me” I think to myself. “
“Hello youngster are you lost?” the man asks.
I responded quickly and knew that this man could help me get home.
"Hello sir, I am Kazar Hansen and I am lost here because I climbed up a ladder in Saskatchewan, Canada to explore, but when I stepped foot on this land, the ladder disappeared.”
The man just nodded his head and said, “Same thing happened to me six years ago in Bermuda, and I haven’t been able to find a way out!”
When suddenly, out of nowhere, a floating green sign appears in front of us. It read “Come to the corn maze and answer three golden riddles to free you and your friend from this mystical isle”
Fortunately the man named James knew where the corn maze was and led me there. The first question was, “What is the capital of Liechtenstein?”
Again, I was lucky because James was a geography master and he said, “Vaduz!” The sign flashed green and we moved on to the next question. This time I found the question and answered it as well. “What has four legs and plays the piano?” I knew the answer right away!
“A piano teacher and their student!” I yelled.
Again the sign flashed green, me and James bumped fists and we moved on to the last question. “Wow this is as easy as pie,” I thought to myself, “we answer one more question and we get to go home!”
Unfortunately I was wrong, the last question was really hard “Belle Fourche, a city in South Dakota is French for what? James and I were stumped, because neither one of us knew how to speak French. But right when we were about to give up, a telephone (of all things…) appeared. There was a sticky-note attached to it that said that we could make one call to someone for a hint.
This just made James and I more stumped than before because we didn’t know who to call. But just then I remembered that my mom had gone to France for a year to teach. I quickly told James who I was calling and made the call. (586-243-8927) My mom answered right away and started crying when I told her the situation I was in. She told us that Belle Fourche means “beautiful fork” in English. When me and James found out that she was correct, we jumped for joy and the ladder reappeared.
Although I knew the long climb back down the ladder would be a long one, I knew that it was worth it. I had discovered the land above the clouds!
The Place Above The Clouds
By: Lana (5th Grader)
“Oh my god” I say, dumbfounded,” Hannah, I found it” I say. Everyone had heard of the mystical place above the clouds. Me and Hannah had been searching for the ladder that led up to it for as long as I can remember, or at least since we found out about it in second grade. Do we really want to go up there, Luna?” Hannah said cautiously. We had always been sure that we wanted to go up, but now that it was right here, we weren’t so sure. I mean how could we, the only person to ever be known to go up, went missing. I took a deep breath, “Yeah, I’m sure” I said, trying to be brave. I start to go up the ladder, my heart pounding right out of my chest. Did I really want to do this? What would be up there? What happened to the person who went missing? I was only on the 5th rung of the ladder, but my hands were sweating profusely.” I heard Hannah,” I’m coming up!” She yelled, her voice cracking. The wind howled, and a chill went down my spine. After what felt like forever, but was really 5 minutes, we made it.
I didn’t want to look out, I was terrified ,but I decided to do it anyway. I had to do it for my brother, whatever happened to him that night. Some believe that he went up, others think that he never found it.
“For Noah” I whispered to myself, trying not to freak out. I could not believe what I saw. “Hannah” I said,” I don’t think we should have done this,” I said quietly. It was a scary place with old buildings. The wood rotting, nails all over the floor, moss growing in every corner and crevice. Hannah had reached the top. Her face was so pale, I could have mistaken her for a ghost. We looked at each other, unsure whether or not we should proceed, or go back down.
Before we could decide I heard a noise, I looked at the ladder, but it was gone. That didn’t make any sense, we had just been on it a few minutes before. How were we going to get down? I didn’t want to worry her but Hannah had to know. ”Hannah” That’s weird I thought, I didn’t hear her answer. “Hannah?” I said, I didn’t get a response. “Hannah?” I still didn’t get a response. “Hannah, where are you?” I was starting to freak out. “Hannah, please come out, this isn’t funny” I managed to say, but I was already starting to have a mental breakdown. I sank to the floor, my heart pounding, tears started welling up in my eyes. I told myself that it would be fine, and that she would be back in a few minutes, but that didn’t happen. After about 15 minutes I decided that the only way I was going to find her was to look for her, I didn’t like it, but I had to!
I started walking trying not to step on anything, I saw something oozing out of the tree almost like slime. As I was walking around, I felt like I was being watched. I told myself that it was nothing, and that it looked like nobody had been here in years. I searched for hours, I ran for so long that my legs started giving up for me, I needed a break. That’s when I saw a cabin, it looked rotten just like the others, but something was different about it. I didn’t know why I chose that one, something just attracted me to it. I set up camp and looked around. I found some old chips and water. This was great! Now I have energy to look for Hannah tomorrow. I thought that it would be easy to fall asleep, considering that I was EXHAUSTED from looking for the ladder, let alone running for hours. I spent hours trying to fall asleep, finally after what seemed like forever, I fell asleep.
I Woke up to the sound of birds chirping, around 8:00 A.M. I decided to get ready for the day, I brought tons of food and water, so that I wouldn't get as tired so quickly. I really wanted to find Hannah, but I was so sore, and only got 3 hours of sleep. Nevertheless, I left the little rusty house, and started looking for Hannah. I looked in the houses, under random wood pieces, in ponds. Anywhere you can imagine, I probably looked in it. By now, it was evening, and the sun had set, and I had to find shelter. I found a decent enough shelter and set camp for the night, that's when I found a treehouse and realized I hadn't looked in the tree. I climbed the tree’s branches not trusting the ladder to hold me, what if it was sabotaged, or so old that it was about to break. I got up, unharmed, the branches were very sturdy and not the hardest to climb.
When I got up, I gasped, “No way” I think, this is impossible! “Noah,” he looked up. “It's me Luna, you remember right?” “I don’t know you,” he said annoyed. He got up and jumped out of the tree, he started running, I had no choice but to follow, I started to chase him, I suddenly got a lot of energy. I must have really missed him, I hadn’t seen him since I was 8 and he was 13, I was now 12 and he was,”17” I whispered. Suddenly he turned into a different path, I turned after him, but he was… gone? “NOOOOOO” I screamed. “PLEASE NOAH” I yelled louder. Questions flooded my head.
Where is Hannah? Why had he gone here? Where was he going? Why had he not remembered me? And more importantly, what was going on?
To be continued…

The Shoes
By: Lizzie (5th Grader)
“Stop talking! Ughhhh!” I said because my owner was squishing me! She went an hour long, probably more conversation with the grocery store clerk about vacuums, lame alert!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally she stopped talking about hmmm I don’t know two more hours later!
As soon as I got home I was thinking about how I could get back at my owner. Aha! I had a fantastic idea! What if I cut my laces and she would not have to wear me, it was a great idea! Wait….. Then I would have to be stuck with Kathy’s daughters shoes, egh. But it is worth a try.
They are so dirty and muddy, and I am the clean shoes that Kathy wears on her very long conversations at random places.
So, about my owner Kathy you may have about her she is the blabber mouth in the town. People like to call her chatty Kathy and it is pretty self explanatory, she is chatty.
Okay, I am going to put my plan into action tonight.
We need scissors,.... and more people. But where would I get more people? I could use the cat but lets hope she doesn’t regurgitate another hairball on me.
“Hey, pssst!” I said to fluffy the cat, “ Will you help me get revenge on Kathy?’’
“Umm what's in it for me?” Fluffy said, raising an eyebrow.
“ I will get you treats anytime you want.” I said
‘YES! Anytime? So I don’t have to act like I like Kathy?”
”Yes, and yes anytime… Wait, you don’t like Kathy?” I said
“ shut up, we never speak about this moment ever again.”
We shaked hands and I moved on to find more people.
I still need more helpers though, I should probably just get my friends and my brothers to help.
“Hey Peter, will you help tonight with something?” I asked,
“ No”
Course he said no
I will get Drew, my younger brother.
“Hiiiiiiiii! Drew! Will you help me hurt myself?” Ooops! I said the wrong thing! “ I mean with something?”
“ Yeah.” There was another awkward pause, “ Only if you give me some of your chocolate.”
I really was not expecting that. Well I guess I kind of was I knew he would want something.
“Yes, just will you help me?”
“Yeah.”
Now I have to ask another someone. I know my bff Hasti!
“Hi, Hasti! Will you help me with something tonight?” I askes crossing my fingers
“Yeah, what do you need help with?’’
“ You will have to wait for tonight, so meet me at the shoe bin with Drew at 8?’’
“Yeah meet you there!”
Later that night
Okay let's put this plan into action! I thought to myself,
“So fluffy is going to get the scissors out of the drawer and Drew and Hasti are going to cut my laces, sound like a plan?’’
“Yeah” John and Hasti said
“And you will get me all the treats that I want?”
“Yes we discussed this earlier.” I said a little irritated
“Okay revenge on Kathy is a go in three, two, one..shoot. Kathy could just get more laces.” I said bummed
“ Too late while you were talking we already cut your laces.”
Fluffy said holding them up.
“AH!!!
“Oops sorry” Hasti said
I was so sad, mad and frustrated that I stormed off. Never to be seen again.
