Music Room Engagement

Project Summary

Throughout the year I consistently researched strategies to enhance student engagement through the use of technology in the music room. There were several project ideas that were implemented and led to success. There were also a couple of projects that were not implemented due to planning, timing and resources. The projects that proved success were the Veteran's Day PBL and Promotional Videos.

Veteran's Day was planned, designed and implemented by the 5th grade students. They utilized all grade levels and the final project was a school wide event to share on honor the stories of our Veterans. Fort Thomas Matters came and interviewed students, teachers, staff and community members to develop a video article that summarizes the project extremely well. I have inserted that video below.

The promotional video project was a collaborative project between digital arts, music and social studies focusing on the Bill of Rights. The students developed videos through to promote their chosen and researched Bill of Right. We were fortunate to tap into the expertise of an artist in residence, Ms. Kelly Asbury. As a team we worked side by side with students in their planning and producing of their videos. Below are a couple of finished projects that highlight their work. I have also attached the digital notebook that Heidi Neltner helped me create for their planning process.

Overall, the challenge from being a part of the Polaris Project was beyond successful. The level of engagement in my classroom was definitely increased and the depth of knowledge that the students have experienced goes beyond the music classroom.
