Context: CONDOLENCES ON THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN GARDINER;
My dear Mrs. Gardiner,
Today I received from Mrs. Storrs, notice of your sad loss and
I cannot but send a few l ines , to express the sympathy of my fam ily in this berevement.
The news brings back to me remembrances of hours, not only in the East, but here and in the Tejon country,which your husband's kindness made to pass so pleasantly .
He has left to his family , an enviable reputation , as a gentleman and a soldier, and what now is far more valuable to them, the re membrance of a Christian character which was exhibited as fully in the wilderness of a frontier post, as it was when he was living within the sound of "the Church going bell" , at the East.
You have our earnest prayers that you and yours may be strengthened and upheld by Grace from on high, in this hour of darkness. Mrs. Kipp sends her love and my son unites with us in this expression of sympathy, and believe me
Yours very truly ,
(Signed) Wm. Ingraham Kipp
