Maverick Jazz News

Jazz ensembles from Chaffin Middle School, Ramsey Middle School and Southside High School will come together on Tuesday, April 30 for an evening of jazz.  The concert will be held in the Southside Auditorium, will begin at 7:00AM and is free and open to the public.  Along with our jazz students we will also feature trombonist Isaac Washam, Tulsa University.  Read his bio below.   

Trombonist Isaac Washam is from Stillwater, Ok. Isaac earned his Bachelor’s degree in music performance from Oklahoma State University and his Master’s degree from the University of North Texas. Isaac played lead trombone in the world famous UNT One O’clock Lab Band under the direction of Steve Wiest and can be heard on the album “Lab 2013”. Isaac’s former teachers include Paul Compton, Vern Kagarice, Tony Baker, and Phillip Graham. 

Isaac has a compelling record of success in solo and chamber music competitions.  Isaac won the Eastern Music Festival Concerto Competition, Quartz Mountain Music Festival Concerto Competition and the Oklahoma State University Concerto Competition.  Isaac also won the International Trombone Association Gilberto Gagliardi Solo Competition, Down Beat Student Music Award for Best Collegiate Classical Soloist, Glenn Miller Birthplace Society Instrumental Solo Competition and Yamaha/Zeno Tenor Trombone Solo Competition.  He has also been a prizewinner or finalist in the Chamber Music Tulsa Robert Heckman Memorial Instrumental Solo Competition, The Crescendo Music Awards Solo Competition and Eastern Trombone Workshop Solo Competition.  As a chamber musician, Isaac has won the Eastern Trombone Workshop Trombone Quartet Competition, International Trombone Association Trombone Quartet Competition, Courtois/Fort Worth Trombone Summit Trombone Quartet Competition, Emory Remington Trombone Ensemble Competition, and twice the Down Beat Student Music Award for Best Collegiate Classical Ensemble. 

After teaching and freelancing in Dallas/Ft Worth for ten years, Isaac now resides in Claremore, Ok.  Currently Washam teaches trombone and directs the jazz band at Tulsa University.  Isaac can be seen performing with King Cabbage Brass Band all around Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas and more. He is married and has two cats Eggroll and Bebe. When not working or practicing, Isaac enjoys Pokémon, playing foosball, and jogging.
