About the SHS Jazz Ensemble
The SHS Jazz Ensemble was introduced into the Southside High School Fine Arts curriculum during the 2010–2011 school year by directors Josh Ray and Sean Carrier. This ensemble provides students with the opportunity to explore jazz and rock styles through both small combo and traditional big band settings. Students in the ensemble perform in approximately three major concerts each year, in addition to participating in festivals, contests, and civic events throughout the academic calendar. A central focus of the program is the development of improvisation skills—an essential element of jazz performance. The SHS Jazz Ensemble is currently directed by Michael Westbrook and Ralph Brody.
