Interview
with Dr. Tim, DC of Beautiful Gate Chiropractic
Topic of Discussion:
Cell Phone Posture
Interview with a Dr. Tim, DC:
Hi, this is Coach Sullivan, and I'm here today with Dr. Tim of Beautiful Gate Chiropractic. He's going to talk to us about some different things that he sees in his office quite a bit dealing with students or people who have posture issues on their cell phones.
Coach Sullivan: So, Dr. Tim, I’ll let you take it away. Thank you!
Dr. Tim: Yeah, thanks, Coach Sullivan. One thing I've seen is just a change in posture over the years. I've been a chiropractor for 10 plus years. And obviously cell phone use is increasing in our society and has a big influence on posture, typically leading to what we call in our world as anterior head carriage, and forward rolled shoulders. Just as an example, the human head is roughly the size of an eight pound bowling ball, and the further it is carried to the front, or to what we call the anterior head carriage. Research says that all aspects of morbidity and mortality increase with those four changes in posture.
Coach Sullivan: Awesome! Okay, so what would you suggest for individuals that you see that are dealing with those kinds of issues?
Dr. Tim: Oh, yeah, once we identify that in our office, usually, again, this involves the teenage population as well as, you know, anyone that has overly used, as we would say, a cell phone. As a character, the first thing I do is identify that, and then we adjust, we adjust the neck and upper back, shoulders, potentially to help correct those deficiencies at the start.
Coach Sullivan: Okay. Do you have any stretches or any kind of movements that you would suggest?
Dr. Tim: Not so much stretching. Stretching actually meaning muscles have been stretched toward the front or anterior, typically causing that problem. Muscles being elongated. So usually we strengthen those muscle groups that are in that pre stretch posture. We suggest exercises typically with a band or a thorough band to help dynamically change the posture, to hold, again, posture muscles posteriorly or toward the back and upright, to really keep the adjustment that we've done.
Coach Sullivan: Okay. Well, you heard it here, folks. We need to make sure that we keep our posture better than what we are doing currently. Thank you, Dr. Tim, for being here and taking a moment to share those wonderful tips. Again, this was Dr. Tim, a chiropractor from Beautiful Gate Chiropractic. Thank you again!
Dr. Tim: Thanks for having me.
