At Vickery Creek Elementary, we strive to expose our students to many different types of artistic media. Students get to create art from items such as simple paper and pencil, to cardboard sculpture and ceramic clay! Our goal is to teach that being artistic and creative can give one a mental break from the stresses of the day! Mental health is important and art can be one of the outlets that provides an escape for our students.
In our classroom, we have created the feel of an art gallery, we have provided students with a glimpse of what an actual art gallery would look and feel like. We have displayed recognizable art works such as, Monet's Water Lilies, Andy Warhol's Campbell Soup Can, Di Vinci's Mona Lisa, Van Gogh's Starry Night, and much much more.

In our Music Class, we introduce students to computer applications related to music, which allow for our leaders to compose their own music, explore various timbres and styles, and play games that teach core musical concepts. We also spend time exploring various types of World Music, including music of the Middle East, India, China, and Africa. Performance and music reading skills are taught through the use of Boomwhacker percussion tubes and other instruments. Finally, students have weekly opportunities to perform for their peers on piano, guitar, percussion, and voice.
So many skills are used in the music classroom that enhance musical understanding and appreciation as well as provide other interdisciplinary connections. We apply concepts in social studies, history, geography, math, literature, and science in music class every day. We learn that we perform well when we synergize as a team. We identify areas of improvement through reflection and get better with practice. Music allows for personal expression and social collaboration, and it's a lot of fun!
