Over the past thirteen years, the South Forsyth Middle School Band program has earned a reputation for musical excellence. The band is the recipient of numerous honors and accolades. As advocates of a growth mindset, we strive for a rigorous and inclusive musical environment for all students. Our motto is, “Just Get Better!” The band program is led by Dr. Andrew Poor and Mr. Brandon Waugh.
Students from the band program enjoy numerous musical opportunities, including, Sixth-Grade Band, Sixth-Grade Advanced Band, three grade-level Concert Bands, Symphonic Band, Advanced Concert Band, Jazz Band, numerous chamber ensembles, and Pep Band.
The South Forsyth Middle School Band has been awarded the 2025 Georgia Music Educators Association Middle School Band Exemplary Performance Award. This is the third time the band has received this honor. The award is presented to select comprehensive bands programs that demonstrate musical excellence in four categories: Large Group Performance Evaluation, District Honor Band participation, All-State Band participation, and GMEA Solo and Ensemble Festival Participation. Last year, six out of six participating concert ensembles earned a Superior rating at Large Group Performance Evaluation. Additionally, there were sixty-two students selected for the GMEA District 9-South Middle School Honor Band, thirteen students selected for the GMEA All-State Band, and over 100 students participated in the GMEA Solo and Ensemble Festival. Congratulations to all students!
All students deserve a quality musical experience which includes instructional rigor and engaging performance and musical experiences in a safe and inclusive environment.
All students should be allowed to grow and progress at the speed and level which matches their motivation and musical experience. It is essential all designed experiences allow for this differentiation.
We believe in the principles of the Growth Mindset. These include: 1) talent is grown, 2) effort counts twice and talent counts once, 3) failure is a natural part of learning, 4) risk-taking is essential to growth, and 5) quality feedback is essential to growth.
