During the sixth-grade year, our students are placed into one of two band classes based on their instrument. Students who are learning a woodwind instrument (flute/oboe/bassoon/clarinet/saxophone) and half of our percussionists are placed into the same class. The other band class is comprised of the other half of our percussionists and those students learning a brass instrument (trumpet/horn/trombone/euphonium/tuba).
Students do not need to have any prior experience. Students will need to provide their own instrument and supplies in order to participate. There are a limited number of school-owned instruments for bassoons and tubas. There are two concerts and no required afterschool rehearsals. There are, however, numerous extracurricular activities opportunities for students looking for more musical opportunities.
It is a great chance to learn about music through performance on a band instrument. Visit the page-Joining the Band- for more details about beginning band.
Advanced Concert Band is an extracurricular ensemble that is open to all students in one of the three on-level concert bands. Placement is by audition in August or through special audition if needed. This ensemble is in addition to the students' regular band class and is for the student who is looking for a more rigorous and challenging musical opportunity beyond their regular band class. Students regularly perform in school concerts, at Large Group Performance Evaluation, chamber music concerts, GMEA Solo and Ensemble Festival, and GMEA District Honor Band/All-State Band. Members in this ensemble also participate in our Jazz Band.
Sixth-Grade Advanced Band is comprised of students from the two sixth grade band classes who meet the qualifications for membership in December of each school year. This ensemble rehearses regularly in January/February/March outside of the regular band class and performs at both school and state-sponsored events. This ensemble is a supplemental ensemble to the students' regular band class.
Jazz Band is comprised of students from all four seventh and eighth grade band classes. Membership is based on interest level and commitment to the additional rehearsals. The ensemble performs a wide range of repertoire in various jazz styles. The ensemble rehearses before school and during Flextime.
