In 6th grade Language Arts, we've spent time setting students up for a productive and successful year by completing the i-Ready Diagnostic and creating accounts for Membean (our vocabulary program) and NoRedInk (our grammar and writing program). We are now beginning our Unit 1 study of narrative writing, with a focus on reading, analyzing, and writing narratives.

Next week, we will focus on the use of language in poetry. Students will take their first formative assessment on poetry and figurative language on Friday, 8/21.

We kicked off Interdisciplinary Literacy with Media Center orientation so that students could find and check out their first books. All students have a booklet where they log books they read. This booklet is kept in a poly folder with prongs, and this folder with the booklet is brought to class every day. We are learning about book genres, and we are working on building our reading stamina with independent reading each day.

We have had a wonderful start to sixth-grade math, and it has been such a pleasure getting to know the students!

All students have been working hard to build their understanding of integers (positive and negative whole numbers), rational numbers (fractions and decimals that can be positive or negative), and absolute value (how far a number is from zero). We are using number lines, real-world examples—such as temperature and bank accounts—and word problems to deepen students’ understanding and help them make meaningful connections to math.

These concepts will help students develop a strong number sense and provide an important foundation for more advanced mathematical thinking. Next, we will extend our understanding of number lines to explore all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.

“For the first week in our science class, students learned about lab safety, working productively in groups, and prefixes used in Earth science.  Next week, we will start our first unit called Unit 1 – Universe & The Big Bang Theory.  Students will understand the theories of the universe including the Big Bang Theory and the difference in size of the solar system, galaxy, and universe.  They will also compare and contrast the geocentric and heliocentric models.  Students will have two formatives within the next two weeks and a summative over this short unit on Friday, August 28th.  We will then move in our second unit called Unit 2 – Forces, Planets & Solar System, and Comets, Asteroids, Meteors.”

Welcome to Social Studies, a foundational unit of our two-year World Area Studies course! In 6th grade, students will embark on an exciting journey through Latin America, Canada, Europe, and Australia. This unit sets the stage for understanding the world in which we live by exploring key aspects of geography, government, economics, and history.

Students will dive into both physical and human geography, learning how these factors influence everyday life. In the government domain, they’ll explore various types of governments around the world, gaining insight into the diverse ways societies are organized, and the levels of citizen participation in various types of governments. The economics domain will build on what they’ve learned in previous years, shifting the focus from the U.S. to how other countries tackle essential economic questions. Lastly, the history domain will highlight major events in each region during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Our first unit is titled Themes of Social Studies. This unit is all about laying the groundwork for a deeper understanding of our global community, and we can’t wait to see our students make these important connections.

Physical Education:

Just a reminder, quarter 1 has started! For any student that has PE for 1st quarter, PE Uniform attire is grey shirt and black bottoms. If you have purchased a shirt, shorts, etc. on School Pay; your child will pick this up in class on one of the first days of the quarter. If your child needs a uniform, it can be purchased on School Pay. Please make sure your child has a grey shirt and black bottoms for the uniform as well as athletic tennis shoes for class every day. 

**If you purchased a PE uniform on School Pay this year, but your child is not in PE this quarter, they will received their PE uniform on the first days of the quarter when they have PE.

Please remind your child to lock up all their valuables in the locker room. Lockers and Locks are available for students to use. 

Leadership:

-We are learning about our different personality types and how to use our strengths in the classroom, social life, and career world!

-We are learning digital literacy hacks that will help students use their resources more efficiently and cooperatively with their peers.

Engineering

In Engineering, the students will be completing three different projects during these nine weeks.  The first individual project is designing a website around a given theme.   The second individual project is creating a specific themed world in Minecraft education.  The third project is working with teams to build a mousetrap car (8th), a paper roller coaster (7th), and a robot (6th).

Lakeside HOSA Membership 2026-2027 Information

Membership Deadline: Friday, September 11

HOSA membership is a multi-step process. Completing the application, submitting the required form(s), or submitting payment alone does NOT complete or guarantee membership. All required steps must be completed by the stated deadline.

Steps to Complete the Lakeside HOSA Membership Process:

1.Attend a Required HOSA Informational Meeting

1. • Attend during Flex on either Friday, August 21 or Friday, August 28 to receive membership information and required forms.

   • Only ONE session is required.

2. Complete and Submit

• The HOSA Membership Application.

3. Complete All Required Parent/Guardian Permission Forms

• All required signatures must be wet signatures signed in ink. Typed, digital, or electronic signatures will NOT be accepted.

4. Return All Completed and Signed Forms to Mrs. Elzey

• Drop off in the HOSA Mailbox outside Room 1310.

5. Complete Membership Payment — $70

• Once all required documents have been received by Mrs. Elzey, payment information will be provided. Payment must be completed by Friday, September 11.

Important Note: All required steps must be completed by Friday, September 11. Incomplete or late membership submissions will NOT be accepted or finalized. No exceptions will be made after the deadline.

Fall Rally Opportunity — Six Flags — October 7

• Students who are officially registered HOSA members by Friday, September 4, will be eligible for the Fall Rally Random Selection.

• Due to limited availability, students who complete all required membership steps by September 4 will be entered into a random selection process for the opportunity to attend. Eligibility for random selection does not guarantee attendance.

General Expectations: HOSA is an active student organization. Members are expected to participate in monthly HOSA meetings, activities, local competitions, and other HOSA opportunities throughout the school year.
