Some of Our Pawtners:
Our Story
It all started in 2019 when Duck was donated to Mrs. Nicoletti's Exceptional Student class. Duck came from a great line of duck hunting dogs. There was just one problem...Duck didn't fetch. He preferred to hang back with the handlers and thus failed duck school. Scot Rucker donated him to Mrs. Nicoletti and the rest is history! We now have a total of eight therapy dogs in our Lambert Pack who serve Lambert High School in various ways. Each has been through extensive training and has passed the AKC Good Citizen Test and continues to work on their skills in other classes like agility, trick, dock diving, and more! Oh, and in case you are wondering, Duck LOVES to fetch now. He just needed a little more time and support.
Our therapy dog program not only supports students (and staff) experiencing stress and other emotional concerns, but they are also providing student confidence (for those working to handle the dogs), communication skills, opportunities for vocational skill development, gross motor coordination, and most often - SMILES!

Our first therapy dog, Duck (a black Labrador Retriever), was donated to our school by a local dog trainer, Scot Rucker, who happens to be President of the Forsyth County Humane Society. Duck’s first job is to serve one of our specialized instruction classrooms and he joined our campus in January 2020. In April 2020, Clover (an English Cream Retriever) was also donated to our school by Scot to serve additional students in our second specialized instruction classroom. About the same time Duck and Clover arrived on campus, one of our staff members also completed the therapy dog training with her personal dog Charlie (a charcoal Labrador Retriever). During the bizarre spring semester of 2020, another staff member and her dog Lucy (a Golden Retriever) also started their work to complete training and become a therapy dog team. In September of 2020, Maggie (a Labradoodle) was donated to Dr. Johnessee, Lambert Assistant Principal (but 2022-23 Principal at Haw Creek Elementary) and completed her training as a Therapy Dog team in October of 2020. Our Principal also completed training at that time with his personal rescue dog, Harlee, who comes to work sporadically, but is an honorary member of our #lambertpack. Charlie’s brother, Gunner (a fox red lab), started sharing visits to campus in Spring 2021. Fall 2021 brought Harley (standard Labradoodle) to our program and that is our pack!

Lambert Pack Dog Park
The Lambert High School Dog Park is bringing another exciting layer to our Therapy Dog program and our Exceptional Students' Classroom. The dog park will provide ongoing opportunities for speech language development, vocational skill building, improvement of social skills and community collaboration to our exceptional students' school experiences. In an ongoing effort to create opportunities for vocational skill development, confidence building, and independent living skills acquisition, Lambert continues to expand on-campus experiential learning for our students.
Over the past year, our specialized instruction classes have adapted the lack of access to Community Based Vocational Instruction experiences into on-campus opportunities for students - all grounded by incorporating our #lambertpack of therapy dogs. Students in our specialized instruction classes created Duck Quackers, their own recipe of dog treats, where they bake, package, market, and deliver these products to our staff every other week. In addition to this opportunity, the students created a presentation about therapy dogs and service dogs that they share with other classes to educate our community about the work our dogs do each day. These students also work on their own communication skills by exercising commands with the dogs, including expanding the repertoire of tricks our dogs can demonstrate during a class presentation.
In effort to provide new opportunities for all of our students to gain new experiences, the #lambertpack dog park will further support social skills, communication skills, build confidence, promote positive speech growth, and offer a unique vocational skills experience for our students and our community.
The Lambert Dog Park was made possible, in part, by a grant from the Forsyth County Education Foundation.
