Fluency is the ability to read with accuracy, proper speed, and with expression. Children must be able to read fluently in order to comprehend what they are reading. This applies to both silent and oral reading. Practicing fluent reading can be done at home with a parent.

Timed repeated readings are an instructional strategy used to improve students' reading fluency. The goal of timed repeated readings is to increase reading speed, accuracy, and expression through repeated practice of a specific passage or text. For grades K-2, ask your child's teacher about UFLI passages.
For grades 3-5, check out the reader's theater scripts by Dr. Chase Young. Reader's theater is a collaborative activity where students read scripts aloud without memorizing lines or using props, focusing on voice and expression to improve oral reading fluency. By repeatedly practicing and performing scripts, students become more accurate, faster, and more expressive readers. This engaging activity provides a fun, authentic purpose for rereading texts, thereby enhancing fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
