When learning virtually, it is important to remember that the home also serves as the classroom during school house. Because of that, it is important to consider the following factors when designing a space for learning.
"The Classroom" - While the learner is still in the home environment, it is important to set up a dedicated space for learning to help put the learner in the mindset of being in school. This includes a space that is free from distractions (TV, toys, siblings, etc.) It should include access to a computer or laptop, quiet surroundings, a desk, chair, and a clock.
Supplies - Just like in a regular classroom, it is important to also have easy access to regular school supplies in a classroom. Supplies include pencil, paper, notebooks, and any other supplies the teacher has requested.
Technology - While technology comes in a variety of shapes and forms, the best environments provide a laptop or desktop computer that is dedicated to school. This device should be logged into the learner's Forsyth Google Account and should not have any other accounts on it. Learners should also have access to reliable fast internet, microphone, camera, and headphones. While it is not required, having access to a scanner and printer will help throughout the day as well.
Learning Coach - Because the teacher and the learner are not in the same setting together throughout the day, the Learning Coach plays one of the most critical roles to a successful virtual experience. The Learning Coach should be available to the learner at all times during the school day to help organize the day, make sure the learner understands the directions, and review over feedback together.
A Great Attitude - Finally, a great attitude and active participation is important to maintain throughout the day. This helps keep the learner engaged and understanding when any technical issues may occur. It is important to build relationships with the teacher to create and maintain a positive learning environment.
