Free or inexpensive trips and home activities


TRIPS/EXCURSIONS - Call before you go to make sure the place is open and whether or not there is a fee. Be sure you have permission from your parents BEFORE YOU GO ANYWHERE. To save money- take a picnic lunch

-Public library

-Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby

-African American Military museum 305 E. Sixth St. Hattiesburg

-Lake Thoreau Environmental Center- USM

-Hattiesburg Pocket Museum

-Longleaf Trace- Bicycle and Walking Path

-Beach

- State Parks- Paul B. Johnson, etc.

-Go camping

- Fishing- with permission of property owner

-$ Skating rink/trampoline park/bowling alley

-Ride 4-wheelers/bikes

-Go to the pool

-Horseback riding

- Help a neighbor/yard work/house work

- Go to mall

-Walk down a creek or in the woods with permission of property owner

-Visit friends or relatives

$Go to a u-pick farm or Farmers’ Market


Home based activities - if you leave your house or yard, get permission from an adult

-Play basketball/football/soccer/baseball

-Go for a nature walk- look for unusual rocks, plants, animal signs or footprints- Use the internet to identify-

Pick wildflowers

Find shapes in clouds

Build something with sticks

-Read a book; read a book to a younger sibling- You can use the North Forrest HS Library website to find books or check them out from Public Library

-$Do jigsaw puzzles, word searches, etc. Cheap ones at dollar stores

-Cook something- ask a relative or other adult for a recipe and help if needed. Look in the e-book section of MAGNOLIA to find recipes books on cooking.

-Help around the house- watch younger children, do dishes, housework

-Plant flowers/vegetables- buy seeds at the dollar store and plant flowers in old coffee cans, milk jugs, etc. Veggies will need larger containers or plant in the ground.

-Picnic outside- or inside

-Make sidewalk chalk drawings

-Learn a new skill- Ask an adult to teach you or find a book to show you how to do what you want to learn *How to use tools: hammer, screwdriver, pliers, wrench

*Sewing machine or needle and thread- make a bag, apron, potholders

*Learn to draw- check out free drawing books available on Amazon

*Paint- canvas, rocks, eggshells, wood, paper, cardboard -$5 acrylic paint set at Walmart

-Do crafts

-Do crafts with younger children

Toilet paper roll crafts

Decorate a bottle/jar

Learn paper cutting or folding

Make a collage

Glue beans, sticks, rocks into shapes on cardboard (cut cardboard from cereal boxes or other boxes)

-$Watch a movie-get cheap at the dollar store

-PLAY GAMES: Hopscotch, hide and seek, cards, board games

-$$$ Make a water slide with plastic sheeting; BUT BE careful- BIG PROJECT and Adult supervision is needed

-$$ Buy a kiddie pool for the house- Adult supervision required

-Hook a sprinkler to the water hose and play with your younger siblings

-Build a campfire and roast hotdogs and marshmallows (with adult supervision)

-Have a sleepover with friends
