In its debut season, the cross country program at Forest City High School made an impressive start, showcasing strong performances and steady growth from both the girls' and boys' teams. On the girls’ side, standout performances came from 10th graders Kandyce Hillesland and Tami Harris. Hillesland achieved a season-best time of 13:11 at Algona and averaged 13:46 overall, while Harris excelled with a best of 12:56 at Clear Lake and an average of 13:43. Eighth graders Andrea Hulsing and Joy Brickman consistently contributed to the team’s success, with average times of 13:56 and 14:14, respectively. The girls’ team had notable placements, securing 2nd place at Newman Catholic and Belmond and finishing the season with another 2nd place at Eagle Grove. On the boys’ side, 11th grader Nick Sopko led with a season-best 17:50 at Klemme and an average of 18:22, while Kirby Sunde averaged 18:42 and posted his best time of 18:21 at Algona. Emerging talent Ben Anderson, an 8th grader, showed promise with a best of 19:36 at Klemme and an average of 20:55. The boys’ team experienced highs and lows, with their strongest showing being a 1st-place finish at Klemme. Despite challenges with participation affecting scoring in some meets, both teams demonstrated resilience and potential, closing the season on a positive note and setting the stage for future success!
The Fall 1991 cross country season was a showcase of determination and growth for Forest City High School's runners, with both the girls’ and boys’ teams achieving notable successes. The girls’ team was led by standout performances from Kandyce Hillesland and Joy Brickman. Hillesland, an 11th grader, posted a season-best time of 12:59 at Forest City and averaged an impressive 13:29, while Brickman, a 9th grader, achieved a best of 12:58 at Humboldt with a season average of 13:30. Other key contributors included Tami Harris, who averaged 13:47 with a highlight performance of 13:14 at Forest City, and Andrea Hulsing, who also averaged 13:47. The girls’ team excelled throughout the season, securing first-place finishes at Newman Catholic and Forest City and earning second place at Belmond and Esterville. Despite some challenges, they maintained strong standings, culminating in a fifth-place finish at Districts in Esterville.
The boys’ team faced tough competition but delivered commendable performances. Brent Wills, an 11th grader, led the team with a season-best time of 17:57 at Cresco and an average of 19:08. Senior Ben Anderson and freshman Zack Tibodeau also contributed significantly, with Anderson posting a best of 19:14 at Cresco and averaging 20:20, while Tibodeau recorded a best of 19:17 at Forest City and averaged 20:21. The boys’ team achieved their strongest result at Forest City with a second-place finish and showed resilience with a fourth-place finish at Cresco.

Gary Flugum made history as the first boys’ cross country runner from his school to qualify for the state meet. Not only did he compete at the state level, but he also excelled, earning All-State Runner honors by finishing 11th with a time of 16:48. His consistent performances throughout the season, including times such as 16:40 at both Humboldt and Algona, and a season average of 16:57, showcased his growth and resilience. His achievement sets a high standard for future runners and underscores the potential for success through dedication and perseverance.
The girls’ cross country team also delivered commendable performances this season. Joy Brickman emerged as a standout athlete, consistently improving her times and averaging 13:52 across various meets. Her best time of 12:47 at Humboldt highlighted her capability to excel under competitive conditions. Teresa Stucki demonstrated steady progress, averaging 14:50 despite missing a few meets. Eighth-graders Shannon Burma, Julayne Freking, Heather Hertzke, and Mia Hannila showed promising potential, with notable highlights including Julayne’s 14:10 at Clear Lake and Heather’s 14:33 at Humboldt.
The boys’ team saw contributions from athletes across various grades. Freshman Troy Trygstad consistently delivered strong performances, including a personal best of 17:16 at Algona and an average time of 17:48. Eighth-grader Mark Jacobsen showcased grit and determination with steady progression. Sophomores Ben Anderson and Joe Niederkofler, along with junior Brian Walker, added depth to the team, with Walker averaging 19:33 and Anderson improving to a best time of 19:09 at Humboldt.
The boys’ team achieved impressive placements, including a 1st place finish at Forest City and a 2nd place finish at Klemme. The girls’ team’s 5th place finish at Newman Catholic and consistent mid-pack rankings at other meets demonstrated their competitive spirit and potential for growth. This season’s achievements, including Gary Flugum’s All-State honor and the promising performances from underclassmen, signal a bright future for both teams. As a team, the girls showed their strength by finishing 3rd at Forest City and 4th at Klemme, among other strong placements. Leading the charge was Gary Flugum, a senior whose dominance on the course was unmatched. Gary’s best time of 15:56 at the state meet crowned him as the 2A State Cross Country Champion, a monumental accomplishment for Forest City. His consistent sub-17-minute finishes were key to the team’s success, and his state title is a testament to his hard work and dedication.
Supporting Gary’s achievements were several other standout athletes, including Troy Trygstad, a 10th grader who showcased his potential with a season-best time of 17:49. Troy’s efforts contributed to the team’s strong showings at key meets, where they finished 3rd at Forest City and 2nd at Klemme.
Other key contributors included Mark Jacobson, whose season-best time of 17:18 highlighted his determination, and Brian Walker, who delivered consistent performances with a personal best of 19:12. Jonathan Olson and Owen Tran also played vital roles in the team’s efforts, rounding out a deep roster of dedicated runners.
The 2024 cross country season was a year of firsts and triumphs for Forest City. Her efforts, alongside contributions from Karen Heifter, Abby Prentice, and freshmen Val Mueller and Jackie Jerome, propelled the team to multiple top finishes, including 2nd place at Pocahontas and Forest City.
On the boys’ side, Troy Trygstad led the team with a season-best 16:45 at Pocahontas and an average time of 17:50, supported by strong runs from Mark Jacobson, Aaron Bakke, and Andy Eastvold. The boys consistently placed near the top, finishing 2nd at Pocahontas, Forest City, and Klemme.
With its largest roster to date and significant progress across the board, the 1994 season marked a turning point for Forest City cross country. The program’s growth and success this year lay a strong foundation for continued achievements in the future. There are other parameters that deems team or program success besides qualifying for state.

For the girls, standout runners included Anita Aeikens (Grade 11), who averaged 12:54 across the season with a personal best of 12:33 at the Algona meet, and Karen Heifter (Grade 12), who averaged 13:47 and recorded a top time of 13:10 at districts. Both Anita and Karen earned First Team All-Conference honors, reflecting their exceptional performances. Top 8 places are recognized as First Team All Conference, and places 9-16th are Second Team All Conference. The girls’ team achieved their best placements with 4th place finishes at both the Klemme-North Iowa Conference Meet and Districts, showcasing their overall consistency.
On the boys' side, Troy Trygstad (Grade 12) led the team with an impressive season average of 16:57, highlighted by a 16:19 performance at the state meet where he placed 9th, earning him All-State Runner honors. Troy’s leadership was complemented by Ethan Albertson (Grade 9), who averaged 17:50 and recorded his best time of 17:04 at Forest City. Both Troy and Ethan were recognized with First Team All-Conference honors. Andy Eastvold (10th Grade) was recognized Second Team All-Conference honors, placing 14th. The boys’ team demonstrated depth and competitiveness, achieving two 1st place finishes at the Newman Catholic and Algona meets, as well as a strong 2nd place finish at Klemme-North Iowa Conference Meet.
The season was a testament to the athletes' dedication and talent, with individual accolades and team successes highlighting a memorable year for the cross country program.

A historic achievement for the program came when both Aeikens and Conklin qualified for the state meet—marking the first time in team history that two runners advanced to state in the same season. Other notable performances included freshman Ashley Kappos, who showed significant progress with a season-best 13:35 at districts, and sophomore Alaina Nath, who steadily improved throughout the season.
The boys' team had a strong season, highlighted by multiple first-place finishes, including victories at Garner, Humboldt, Pocahontas, and Forest City. Sophomore Ethan Albertson emerged as a top competitor, recording an impressive 16:18 at Pocahontas. Senior Christopher Higgins provided veteran leadership, consistently finishing under 18 minutes and clocking a season-best 16:52 at Pocahontas. The team's depth played a key role in their success, with contributions from athletes such as sophomore Tom Greenwood and freshman Ryan Hinders. Despite a challenging conference meet, where they placed third, they had a solid showing at districts.
