Fordham University's Graduate School of Education, in collaboration with KIPP NYC, NYC School District 9, and NYC School District 75 has launched a five-year Mental Health Service Professional Demonstration (MHSPD) project. This federal grant-funded initiative aims to address mental health professionals' shortages in specific high-need schools, prioritizing applicants committed to seeking employment in these schools upon graduation.
The project involves selecting a yearly cohort of 25-30 culturally diverse graduate students for one semester of comprehensive training, covering essential topics to prepare them for their subsequent two semesters of field experience in identified high-need schools. The collaboration with KIPP NYC and NYC School Districts 9 and 75 strengthens the program's impact by providing unique opportunities, resources, and perspectives.
The MHSPD project aligns with the grant's objectives, focusing on:
(a) Enhancing Learning Education Agency's (LEAs) capacity to deliver mental health services effectively.
(b) Increasing students’ access to counseling services.
(c) Ensuring students receive evidence-based and culturally and linguistically inclusive mental health services.
The project seeks to not only address the shortage of mental health professionals but also to create a lasting impact on the mental well-being of students in underserved communities.
