Registration Instructions for those Working on Proposals
THEO 0950 Proposal Development. After you have completed your exams, you will register for THEO 0950. You will register for THEO 0950 each semester, including the semester of your proposal colloquy. Once you have received approval for your proposal and the department submits the paperwork to the GSAS office, the deans will sign the Dissertation Title Approval Form and change your status to THEO 0960 Proposal Acceptance. Note: only the deans can register you for THEO 0960; once that program requirement is officially filled on your transcript with the THEO 0960 designation, you will sign up for dissertation direction (THEO 9999) until the semester you defend.
After passing exams, students have up to no more than TWO semesters to develop a proposal and have it approved by the department.
Students may be dismissed from the program if the proposal is not approved after FOUR semesters of non-completion of the proposal after the exams have been taken.
Doctoral students who have not secured approval of their dissertation proposal at least five semesters before the expiration of their time limit are automatically placed on academic probation without notice..
**All students out of coursework MUST fill out the Matriculated Student Status Form to maintain funding.
Developing the Proposal
Doctoral Dissertation Proposal
The dissertation proposal presents the student’s plan for a major research project, in fulfillment of the last essential requirement for the degree. The proposal should contain the following components with a page length of no less than 15 and no more than 30 double-spaced pages plus bibliography: According to the Department RED BOOK, the proposal should contain:
A brief statement of the problem to be studied and the background or antecedents of the issue which lead the candidate to propose a study of this particular area.
A statement of the thesis.
A description of the method(s) to be used, and of the logical order in which the research is expected to unfold.
An outline of the contents of the dissertation in chapter form or other sequential units.
The specific contribution that this study is expected to make to the field of theology.
Testimony to the originality of the precise research thesis being proposed.
Instructions and Timeline for Proposal Submission and Colloquy
Student completes the proposal.
Student submits the proposal to their full committee.
Committee members read and approve the proposal.
With that approval, the student emails the Chair of the Doctoral Committee, cc'ing Sue, with a statement of intent to schedule the proposal. The completed proposal is attached and the full committee is copied on the email.
The Chair of the Doctoral Committee and Doctoral Committee members will work to select an outside proposal colloquy member (generally, a Doctoral Committee member) to be present during the colloquy.
Once an outside member is assigned, the Doctoral Committee will contact the dissertation mentor, and the mentor will schedule the colloquy.
The Colloquy takes place, and the forms are filled out and submitted to GSAS
