đź‘‹Welcome to Psycho-educational Evaluation of Children with Learning Problems (EDS 741). Over the next 14 weeks, we will engage in a guided learning experience that explores the theoretical foundations and practical techniques of psycho-educational evaluation for children with learning and behavior challenges. Emphasis will be placed on standardized, informal, observational, computer-based, curriculum-based, and portfolio assessment, with special attention to the influence of culture, language, and gender on testing. In our practicum component, you will administer assessments, score and interpret results, and communicate findings to parents, teachers, and other professionals. We will also examine issues of advocacy and self-advocacy as integral to effective educational evaluation.

The School of Education holds an annual Event Week in the fall semester. Event Week is a time to gather as a community and hold presentations, talks, and experiences, that help us think critically about excellence in culturally and linguistically sustaining practices. The activities of Event Week are meant to enrich our curricula. For this reason, events are held during class time and professors are encouraged to integrate attendance to Event Week activities as course participation. In the 2025-26 academic year, Event Week will be held November 18, 19, and 20.
This semester’s low-stakes challenge invites you to build your Mental Fitness. Each day, before or after work, take a quiet moment to picture a sturdy glass jar in a safe corner of your home. When stressful thoughts or anxious feelings arise, imagine placing them gently into the jar and sealing it tight. You can return to them later if you choose — but for now, they’re safely contained. So… what thoughts or feelings would you put in the jar today?
Want to add the Worry Jar Technique to your SEL toolbox? Start here. You will work individually to review one psychological instrument. Your review will include a discussion of the following:Â
psychometric properties;Â
intended and actual uses;Â
generalizability to the educational environment; andÂ
special concerns and alerts related to their use.Â
You will be provided with a format for this assignment. The Burros Mental Measurements Yearbook and Tests in Print, along with reference books in the Special Education Section of the Lehman College Library are sources for extensive information about tests and test reviews – both of which are included in the the Lehman College databases. On the assignment due date, you will deliver an oral presentation that is not to exceed 10-minutes using a slideshow tool of your choice (e.g., PowerPoint, Prezi). A detailed review of the assignment guidelines will occur in advance of the deadline to ensure that you have a thorough understanding of the purpose of the assignment, the steps you will need to take to successfully complete it, and how the assignment will be graded. Unsure where to start? This model will help you click into gear.
Click HERE to submit your presentation & accompanying session materials (i.e., handouts, graphic organizers, etc.) on or before December 15.
This project relates to the primary purpose of assessment, which is effective educational planning for children with atypical academic, social emotional, and behavioral development. You will select members of your Professional Learning Community (PLC) or working group. PLCs will be provided with a clinical evaluation. In-class workshop time has been scheduled for PLC members to work collaboratively to draft the IEP. For this assignment, your PLC will:
Step 1: Write an Individualized Education Plan using the NYSED IEP Form based on the information detailed in the PLC's assigned clinical report.
Step 2: Formulate specific recommendations for:
Click HERE to submit a copy of the co-developed draft IEP document on or before December 19.
The Final Take-Home Exam will serve as a comprehensive review of the concepts, practices, and case applications explored throughout the semester. The assessment will include a mix of multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, and open-ended case-based questions, allowing you to demonstrate both your factual knowledge and your ability to apply course content to real-world scenarios. You may use your notes, readings, and other course materials to complete the exam; however, collaboration with classmates is not permitted. The exam will be distributed as a single downloadable file and will draw on lecture discussions, assigned readings, and hands-on activities completed during the semester. Case-based questions will require you to interpret sample psycho-educational data, analyze a student learning profile, and propose evidence-based recommendations. Multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short-answer items will focus on key terminology, procedures, and theoretical frameworks introduced in class.Â
The estimated time to complete the exam is two to three hours, though you may work at your own pace prior to the submission deadline. All responses must be typed and submitted electronically via Google Forms by December 20, 2025.
