Ear irrigation is a safe and routine procedure to remove excess earwax (cerumen), debris, or foreign materials from the ear. While earwax naturally protects and lubricates the ear, excessive or hardened buildup can cause discomfort, ringing, or temporary hearing loss.

Purpose of Ear Irrigation:
Removing excess wax helps prevent damage to the ear canal and eardrum, minimizing risks to your hearing and overall ear health.

What to Expect:

• Initial Assessment: Your nurse will use an otoscope to examine your ear and confirm wax buildup as the issue. If the wax is hardened, you may be advised to soften it with mineral oil for a week before irrigation.

• Procedure: A pressurized irrigation device is used to flush out the wax gently. Some discomfort may occur but is typically brief.

Important Considerations:
Ear irrigation is not recommended if you have a damaged eardrum, ear tubes, an ear infection, or a weakened immune system. Risks include infection, compacted wax, or, in rare cases, eardrum perforation.

Side Effects:
Temporary side effects may include dizziness, mild discomfort, or ringing in the ears, which typically resolve within a day. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention promptly.
