Historical Evolution

Both the issues of ocean pollution and overfishing are issues that have long historical backgrounds that led us to the place we are today in terms of these issues. Educating ourselevs on the historical evolutions of these issues is key to making an effective action plan

Ocean Pollution: How did we get where we are today?

The issue of ocean pollution was identified in the 1960's when ocean dumping reached its peak. At this time the main pollutants being dumped into the ocean were chemicals. However, around 10 years later, plastic pollution became a huge part of the problem when it was discovered that various marine life species were ingesting the plastics in the ocean. This brief history brings us to where we are today, with ocean pollution being one of the biggest environmental issues today.

Overfishing: How did we get where we are today?

The issue of over fishing first occurred in the early 1800's, specifically when the whaling industry caused the blue whale population to be almost completely terminated by 1851. Other species have historically been threatened due to over fishing and unsustainable fishing laws, which brings us to where we are today with the serious and growing issue of unsustainable fishing of species.

Overfishing today

Today, many species have gone extinct or been classified as threatened or endangered due to overfishing. Unsustainable fishing laws also put people with careers within fisheries at risk.
