Social Teaching
Catholic Social Justice Teachings maintain that everyone is equally loved and seen in the eyes of the Lord.
Having a learning disability should not hold you back from practicing a religion, becoming educated, or being treated in just and fair ways.
“Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” Through every commandment, the most valuable and strong theme is love. With love, comes acceptance and peace.
In terms of loving, you must love everyone and accept who they are as well as appreciate them for who they are. This includes people with learning disabilities or ASD.
Each person equally matters and is just as deserving of love as anyone else, no matter how they are diagnosed or labeled.
This is an important connection because, with all the discrimination, stereotypes, and challenges people with disabilities face, the world needs to remember at the end of the day everyone is human and deserving of the same love and justice.
“This is my commandment, That ye love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12)
“We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person.”
Lack of resources or proper education to those with ASD violates and threatens their rights as human beings. As does bullying and stereotyping.
Romans 12:9-18 says, “Love one another, contribute to the needs of others, live peaceably with all.”
When you treat others with respect and love, this brings peace to not only your own life but their lives as well.
Nobody wants to live in a world where they feel ostracized or wrong for being who they are and should be.
