The root cause of all of this discrimination comes from a lack of education. Treatment in today’s society has improved, but autism is still extremely stigmatized and people are treated without dignity and respect.
The NCPD, or National Catholic Partnership on Disability, is an organization that has the goal of making Catholic teachings and participation accessible to all and in meaningful ways.
“It is believed that about one-third of individuals with ASD are non-verbal, and some have significantly challenging behaviors… In order to ensure that all persons with ASD can meaningfully participate in the Church, individualized attention is key, as well as a diverse repertoire of resources and accommodations”
Autism Society wants to make people’s dreams, visions, talents, and relationships seen and heard. Their main goal is to “influence meaningful change in support of the Autism community”. They support federal policies that place people in jobs and increase the employment rate, ensure that people with ASD have access to inclusive and general education, offer at-home, affordable, and inclusive community-based services, and ensure access to affordable and reliable health care. They have created a network of public policies, training programs, and initiatives to further reach their goals and help people and families across the United States.

To personally make a difference, my action plan includes setting up a fundraiser to raise money for the Autism Society. Through a link posted on my FaceBook page and on this website, people can directly make a donation. Donations to the Autism Society help fund education, home care, community-based services, at-home services, and health care for people with ASD and their families. I also raised awareness through social media posts during April, since it was Autism Acceptance (or Awareness) month.
