Marine pollution is one of the most prominent issues in our world today. By definition it is “a combination of chemicals and trash, most of which comes from land sources and is washed or blown into the ocean. This pollution results in damage to the environment, to the health of all organisms, and to economic structures worldwide” (National Geographic). Marine pollution not only harms marine life and ecosystems, it affects all people, from all walks of life, all around the world. The ocean is one of the biggest resources for all life forms, so when the ocean is hurting, every living thing is hurting too. This is why it is a social injustice.
Ocean pollution not only harms the oceans and the animals that live in it, but it impacts all the other lives that depend on it for survival, including humans. This issue is an injustice because it violates many of the Catholic Social Teachings, including Life and Dignity of the Human Person (or in this case, marine life), Rights and Responsibilities, and Care for God’s Creation.
I chose to bring awareness to this injustice because it is an issue I have been passionate about for a long time. I have always loved the ocean and all the different forms of life that consider it their home, and I want to raise awareness for their protection. I want to educate others on the impacts our actions are having on our planet, and inspire them to want to help make a change in the world. We only have one planet Earth, with the ocean making up 70% of it, so we need to protect it and all its life forms and resources.
