Dysphoria- the condition of feeling one's emotional and psychological identity to be at variance with one's birth sex.
Gendered Language- Gendered language refers to any form of language which implies the gender identity of the person it is referring to.
Misgendering- to refer to (someone, especially a transgender person) using a word, especially a pronoun or form of address, that does not correctly reflect the gender with which they identify.
Gender Binary- the categorization of gender in two distinct, opposite sexes.
Transition- the process of changing one's gender expression to match their gender
Cisgender- denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex.
Misinformation is fueling the ongoing attack against trans youth. Using outdated and potentially offensive vocabulary when talking about gender limits comfortability among transgender youth, restricting their access to authentic support in their community. Using one's chosen name and pronouns is a matter of basic respect and validation of the dignity of a transgender individual. A supportive and respectful environment has been shown to decrease suicidal tendencies among trans youth.
