About Me

Why the death penalty?

When it came to choosing my social justice fair topic I wanted to pick something that I felt passionately about. Every year at Fontbonne, a few sophomore English classes read the novel Just Mercy. This book highlights the story of a man, Walter McMillian who was put on death row and later exonerated. After reading Just Mercy and watching the movie, I remember being so intrigued by how someone could be falsely convicted and sentenced to death row. Being so intrigued, I started to do some research on the death penalty. While doing my research, I learned the startling fact that for every eight people executed, one person on death row has been exonerated. After learning this statistic I knew I had to learn even more, so I decided to choose the death penalty as my social justice issue.
