Plan of Action

Social media exposes some negative influences on young children. We can counteract these negative influences with positive ones. Social media is such a great and enormous resource that can be beneficial if used correctly and for the right reasons. If it is one of the root causes for this injustice then we should be able to use that same cause and turn it into something greater.

The important step right now is to spread awareness and gather as a community to stop this injustice that is hurting multitudes of people. It is better to fight together with the same goal rather than as one single voice. We cannot be silenced but we needed to be heard.

Everyone uses social media now so we should target the younger audience because they are the new future generation that can make changes in this society. They just need to be aware and educated about these issues. We all have a moral compass and should stand by it. When something is wrong and is not morally correct, then the only justice thing to do is to fix the problem that is causing so much pain.

Petitions

Here are some amazing petitions where you can sign and support the movement of body positivity and help take the step to end society's beauty pressures.

Zivame - Include mature (40+age) models in your media and advertising #AgeNotCage

Ageism is discrimination on the basis of age which decreases one's self-respect and self-confidence.

A petition was started because a woman had noticed something when she was shopping on an online lingerie store called Zivame. Most of the models who were showcasing the lingerie looked to be in their 20s or 30s. Although, Zivame is a brand that does promote body diversity such as having a special collection for curvy women. Geeta J. believes by addressing this to the CEO of Zivame, will give women beyond the age of 40 confidence in their changing bodies. This will lead to a change in the mindset of people in her country who think that after 40, women should dress and behave in a certain way.

"Women empowerment is not only about all colors and all sizes, but also about all ages. Let us bring more inclusivity and diversity in the industry by taking this step of crushing ageism." - Geeta J.

New social and media laws urgently needed to protect vulnerable people in the public eye

Chamali Smith believes that the social media systems contain poison that leaches onto people that, when they are vulnerable, has literally led to their death, often at their own hand. Chamali is a suicide survivor of ten years so she felt very connected with this issue of social media. She does not want to stand by and watch talented, loved, people harm themselves or end their own lives with the added burden of unfair and undeserved external pressure.

"If the media and social media companies themselves have not been able to establish an effective system of checks and balances to ensure that manslaughter via media does not occur, then I believe with all my heart that our Government has a duty of care and moral responsibility to legislate to protect vulnerable people in the public eye." - Chamali Smith
