Elevation data is needed for determining the direction of runoff. The DRC does not use digital elevation data directly. Instead, this information is distilled into a set of connection tables which describe topographic associations between canals and fields through the 'Terrain Processing' ArcToolbox. These tables are quasi-static, meaning they do not typically change. However, whenever the Water Rights Distribution Network is updated, it is recommended that these tables be recomputed since flowline IDs may have changed.

The standard source for acquiring digital elevation data for the United States is the USGS National Map.
Go to the National Map Downloader at: https://apps.nationalmap.gov/downloader/

Upload a zipped shapefile to identify the geographic extents of your model.

An outline of the boundary for your area of interest is now visible in the map view. This is used this to determin data availability and select DEM tiles that overlap your area of interest.
Uploaded model extents are displayed in the map viewer.
Scroll to the bottom of the 'Elevation Products' section and select the show availability to see data available for the area of interest.
The 1/3 arc-sec (10m) product is typically sufficient, although there may be 3m (1/9 arc-sec) available. If 10m tiles are not available for your entire area, we recommend using the 1 arc-sec (~30m) product.
Shaded areas indicate where elevation is available at various resolutions.
Scroll back to the top of the side menu and select the 'Search Products' button.
After selecting the 1/3 arc-second product and centering the map view on the area of interest, select the "Search Products" button.
This brings up a list of individual tiles. Hover over any tile. If a particular tile overlaps your area of interest, choose the cart icon next to that particular tile to add it to your cart. Hover over each tile, adding all of them that overlap with your area of interest.
Tiles that do not intersect with your area of interest can be ignored. If you accidently add it to your cart, you can remove it by selecting the trash can icon.

Once all the relevant tiles are added to your cart, click on the "Cart" tab at the top of the side menu.
View items in your cart by selecting "Cart" tab at the top of the side menu.
This brings up a view that shows the items in your cart. Each item has its own download link. Click each of these links one at a time and wait for the data to download.
Click the download link for to download a tile.
Once all the data is downloaded, you are ready to process the terrain to generate the runoff tables using the 'Terrain Processing' ArcToolbox.
