"Where you live should not determine whether you live or whether you die" – Bono

A project about recognising the impact of unequal power and access to resources

Unequal Power and Access to Resources

In this cross-curricular project we hope to illustrate just how unjust our world remains despite our advances in science and technology. Sadly it remains an inconvenient truth that where we are born has a massive impact on determining the rest of our lives – not our ability, our merit, our work ethic – just sheer luck as to where we are born.

Project Content

  • You will look at life expectancy, access to education and opportunity, child labour and how these vary depending on where you are born. Not just worldwide but variations within UK too

  • You will look at the class system in England, slave trade; colonialism and the British empire? Is the class system dead? What do we mean by Disadvantaged students? What is a public school and why do they have charitable status?

  • You’ll look at racism, sexism, sectarianism and how these impact on your life chances. FSG WAS FOUNDED IN 1905, Harvey was founded in 1674. Why?

  • You’ll look at character and resilience. What makes some succeed where others fail

  • You’ll learn about our positions of privilege through studying books about childhood in other lands

  • You’ll learn about global warming, drought, alternative energy, using technology to solve problems and how what happens here has an impact there too; its an interconnected world

  • You’ll learn about blue zones and their secrets for a long and happy life; its not money!

  • You’ll look at the world as a village of 100; at the distribution of wealth

  • You’ll look at our ability to be more connected than ever and yet feel more disconnected than ever

  • You’ll learn about social responsibility and social care; taxation, international aid and charity. Can we really make things equal – and if so who should do it?
