Priority Standards

“A ‘guaranteed’ curriculum is often defined as a mechanism through which all students have an equal opportunity (time and access) to learn rigorous content. This requires a school-wide (or district-wide) agreement and common understanding of the essential content that all students need to know, understand, and be able to do." - Kathleen Dempsey

What are priority standards?

The priority standards are a sub-set of the grade level learning standards. They are standards that students must know and be able to do by the end of each school year in order to be prepared for the standards at the next grade level.

The following criteria were considered when selecting Priority Standards:

  • Endurance: Concepts and skills needed through the years.

  • Leverage: Crossover applications within a content and across contents.

  • Readiness: Prerequisites for future learning.

Priority standards do not represent all that is taught. Rather, they represent the standards with which we will intervene FIRST.

Each Priority Standard has related Learning Scales.

What are Learning Scales?

“Think of the scales as a staircase, and each step is an achievement on its own, leading us to the next step. These steps allow students to experience success at each level and reinforce the effectiveness of the growth mindset.” -The Standards Based Classroom
