I'm Rebecca Pollack and I am the school librarian here at Orchard Park Elementary School. Orchard Park Students are Readers! We love finding great books and talking about them with friends and family. Second quarter of library is about building research skills. Students learn about different research tools through Class Link which you can access at home.
Students used Culture Grams to research a Spanish speaking country for Hispanic Heritage Month.
Students also review how to take notes and cite sources. Research sites on Discus Kids inside Class Link often have citations that kids can cut and paste into their research documents. Students are also taught how to use the Google citation builder tool in Google Docs.
Silent reading/partner reading is an important part of every library class.
Fifth graders can come to early morning check out any morning of the week.
Second quarter is about building research skills. Students learned about giving credit to sources. They learned about why plagiarism is bad and practiced how to write their own citations. Google has a citation tool in Google Docs which students are taught to use.
For Veterans Day, students learned about how dogs were used during World War 1 both as working animals and also as mascots to units.
To follow up on their work in the wax museum, students learned about different methods of spying through the Culper Spy Ring on Long Island. Anna Strong used her laundry to signal a spy and send messages. The intelligence provided prevented a British ambush of French troops in July 1780 which helped America win its independence.

Second quarter of library is about building background knowledge and answering questions while reading. In order to enjoy a book, you need to know what is going on in the story.
In order to build knowledge in nonfiction topics, Students learned an overview of the categories of the Dewey Decimal System. This included an online library catalog scavenger hunt activity using white boards.
As part of Veterans Day, third graders learned about the Space Force and other important facts about the history of Veterans Day.
We reviewed problem and solution both in real-life situations and in books that we have read this year. We also discussed character traits and how those traits impact the story.

Second quarter of library included an introduction to Britannica Animal Kingdom, a research site in Class Link. Students and practice with the Dewey Decimal System.
Students researched two different kinds of turkeys, common and ocellated, and then shared the information they learned with students who researched the other kind of turkey.

Students learned about Wh questions. We answered questions as we read a book and also through recall of some previous books we had read in class this year.
For Veteran's Day, we learned about the different service branches and jobs people have in the military. We discussed the difference between a business trip and a military deployment.

Second quarter of library is where our routines start to come together. Each week we play a game, read two poems which change each month, discuss a relevant topic, read a book, write or draw a response and then check out one book to take home.
Topics this quarter included Veterans Day, parts of a story, Thanksgiving and holiday traditions.
Kindergarteners can come to early morning check out any morning of the week and explore all sections of the library with a #shelfie helper. These older students walk kindergarteners to the library, help them find an appropriate book for their age level and walk them back to class.
