Welcome to our School Counseling Site!
Welcome to our School Counseling Site!
We are so excited to have the opportunity to work with your kids at Orchard Park! We are so honored to be able to serve and provide support to you and your families again this school year. We have looped up with our students from last year to ensure that they already know their School Counselor. We'll be providing classroom lessons to all students during Related Arts. We will also provide short term individual counseling and small group counseling to students throughout the school year when an issue directly relates to school. We receive referrals through collaborating with teachers and parents.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to another AMAZING year at OPES!
The Magic of ME-My Magical Choices
In this lesson students learned about the magic of making magical choices-magical as in good choices that would be great in making new friends, showing responsibility to parents and teachers and the people around them. New character words/traits were introduced to them from our discussion after reading the story My Magical Choices ( Responsible, Helpful, Patient, Confident, Generous, Good Sport, Brave, Forgiving, Gentle, Friendly, Fun, and Calm were the new words for discussion). After reading My Magical Choices, students were given the opportunity to share which word stuck with them most and how they can apply it to their life. After choosing their “word”, they created a 2026 plan to reach their goal. When finished, students presented their word to the class.
How to Build Positive and Safe Friendships
In this lesson students learned the importance of building safe relationships with their peers and siblings. We discussed how we need to learn fun and positive ways to work, play, and live together. After watching a video on friendship, we played a game and did a dance called “We Can All Get Along”. After the dance, students drew a picture showing how they can play, live, and work together with their friends.
Being a SUPER Friend
In this lesson students were taught different ways that they can be a good friend to others. Being a SUPER friend means that we share our ideas and time, work to understand our friends, play nicely, encourage and respect each other. Students made friendship flowers that were representative of the qualities that represent a good friend.
Problem Solving
In this lesson, students were taught different ways to solve problems in their friendships. We learned that we need to say the problem before we work on thinking of solutions. We also discussed the importance of “I feel” statements. Sharing how we are feeling during a problem helps our students better understand what the best solution is.
Goal Setting for 2026
In this lesson, students made a plan to accomplish four 2026 goals by the end of this year. (a life goal, a school goal, a peace goal, and a fun goal). After writing down their goals, they made a plan to complete the goal with resources that they would need to make the goal complete.
Careers/ Inventors/Future Aspirations
In this lesson students were shown a poster with inventors and their inventions that were created in the 1700 and 1800s. We had a discussion about the limited resources that they had and how they made it possible to make a big impact by using their creativity. After our discussion we watched a video showcasing inventions that we use today and how far they have come. After the video, students were given the opportunity to think about and create their own inventions to share with their classmates in our next class session.
Healthy Friendships
In this lesson, students identified different traits that they would find in a healthy friendship versus an unhealthy friendship. Some of the qualities of a healthy friendship were trusting, kind and fun. Some of the qualities of an unhealthy friendship were unkindness, not listening, and rudeness. We discussed the importance of looking for these traits in our friends. The students made friendship flowers to identify the “healthy qualities” that they look for in their friendships.
Conflict Resolution
In this lesson, students learned about the best ways to resolve conflicts when we have them with our friends. Students shared examples of what a conflict may look like, an example being not being able to decide what movie to watch with your brother or sister. Students learned about the importance of compromising with their friends or siblings. We worked through different examples and came up with our own “I feel” statements. My favorite example being “I feel sad when you always pick the same game to play at recess because I don’t get to play my favorite. Next time can we split up the time so we can both play what we like?” Students were split into groups and got to share a conflict and an I feel statement.

Next time can we both share what we want so we can try and make it equal?” Students practiced these statements together and got to practice the conflict solving skills by acting out different conflicts in groups.
