Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish learning environments and experiences that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation. SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities. Fort Mill Middle School utilizes the Second Step Program to teach SEL skills to our students every Monday.
The SBMH program makes mental health therapy and other services available for any student experiencing short or long-term behavioral, emotional, and adjustment difficulties. Fort Mill Middle School partners with Atrium for in order to offer students on-going school-based mental health therapy. These services are delivered virtually, during the school day, and are available to all students who have private insurance.
If you would like your student to receive SBMH therapy, please contact your child's school counselor to complete the referral process.
Losing a loved one can be a difficult experience for both students and their parents. Fort Mill MS has partnered with Kindermourn to provide students and their families with resources to help them during the grieving process.
ParenTeen Connect
At FMMS, we believe that Social and Emotional Learning, or SEL, is just as important as Academics. We are all growing, learning and changing throughout life, and learning how to identify, understand and cope with our emotions in a healthy way is imperative to our students' growth and development. Our school will be exploring SEL through Second Step. Second Step also offers information for parents/guardians to connect with their adolescents through their ParenTeen Connect page.
