ARTICLE wRITING

Newspaper articles require a different style of writing from what is used when writing a narrative story. A newpaper article has all the important information in the opening or lead paragraph. This information includes who, what, when, where, why and how. It is written this way because most people do not read an entire newspaper article all the way through. So newspaper writers put the most important information at the beginning.

Headline: Short attention-getting statement about the event

Byline: Tells who wrote the article

Paragraph 1: Lead/Important Details

  • Who, what, when, where (why, how)
  • Answer the assignment question; without using the words of the question in your answer.

Paragraph 2: Explanation/Support

  • Information the reader might want to know. Includes facts and details and 1-2 quotes. Answers any questions the reader might have after reading paragraph one.

Paragraph 3: Conclusion/Additional Info

  • Least important details; "Quotes"; What is going to happen next?

Novel Study

The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis

"Eleven-year-old Parvana lives with her family in one room of a bombed-out apartment building in Kabul, Afghanistan's capital city. Parvana's father -- a history teacher until his school was bombed and his health destroyed -- works from a blanket on the ground in the marketplace, reading letters for people who cannot read or write. One day, he is arrested for the crime of having a foreign education, and the family is left without someone who can earn money or even shop for food. As conditions for the family grow desperate, only one solution emerges. Forbidden to earn money as a girl, Parvana must transform herself into a boy, and become the breadwinner."
