Within this action, we aim to assess the suitability of RemoTrees system observations to develop analytical tools to quantify impacts of climate change and extreme climatic events on trees, by integrating EO and in-situ data.

We will investigate the pathways of trees health parameters, which ultimately lead to their death under the pressure of climatic extreme events, using the RemoTrees data from individual trees, as well as their potential recovery thus improving our understanding of trees resilience.

Moreover, we will quantify forest above-ground biomass increase and its influencing factors and compare the site-level upscaled results with EO products. These results will provide evidence on the accuracy of above-ground biomass change products in undersampled regions.

We will produce a catalogue of necessary requirements to further deepen our understanding of climate impacts on vegetation in remote areas, including recommendations for improved sampling design and site selection.

Climate and forest case study activities have not officially begun, but GFZ (Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences) has started preparatory work. Building on the automated metadata collection from sites coordinated by Philipps Universität Marburg, the GFZ team conducted a preliminary assessment of data sources to identify resources for upcoming work package activities. A Python script is currently being developed to collect and spatio-temporally align data based on sensor and plot geolocations. This script follows a similar structure to the previously developed metadata tool while incorporating additional data sources and processing steps.
