Creative Writing:
Whether you are new to creative writing or you have authored your own fabulous piece (or pieces), this course is designed to help you unlock your creativity as well as give you the tools to develop your storytelling abilities. As students, you will also have the opportunity to collaborate with your peers in our Writer's Cafe where you will work together to polish your portfolio pieces.
Critical Thinking and Study Skills:
Get better grades and higher test scores, and increase your success in high school. If you are already a good student, you will learn new study skills and testing skills that will help you get even better. If you struggle in school, this course will give you the Success Mindsets, study skills, and testing skills to perform at new levels. This half-credit course teaches the ACE test-taking method, which will assist students in their approach to high-stakes testing.
Throughout the course, Mawi Asgedom, a Harvard graduate who was the first in his family to attend college, will coach you. Mawi is a student success expert who has trained over a million students.
Debate 1:
The purpose of Debate 1 is to develop students’ beginning awareness, understanding, and application of language arts as they apply to oral communication concepts and strategies. Students will learn to craft and analyze Lincoln-Douglas, policy, and extemporaneous debates.
Digital Art Imaging 1:
You interact with digital art every day, why not learn how to create it? In Digital Art Imaging 1, you will explore the fundamental concepts, tools, and techniques of digital imaging. You'll learn how to use computers, digital cameras, editing software, and more to create digital artworks and use the critique process grow artistically as you evaluate and respond to your own work. This course provides elective credit and fulfills a performing/fine art requirement for high school graduation.
Driver Education/Traffic Safety:
Must be at least 14 and a half years old. Hit the road with FLVS in our Driver Education course. Students will study the Highway Transportation System, traffic signs, rules of the road, and collision avoidance. Students will learn how to make good choices behind the wheel and begin to develop the skills necessary to become safe, responsible drivers who reduce risk to themselves and all other roadway users. Students will develop an understanding of safe driving techniques and skills in preparation to take to the roads and highways as real-world drivers.
This course fulfills the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) Traffic Law & Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) that is required to obtain a Learner’s License (permit). As an added benefit for completing the course with FLVS, students will also be eligible to take the Learner’s License exam online for FREE!
Guitar 1:
Ready to play guitar? Experience isn’t needed, but a six-string guitar is. If you have never touched a guitar, don’t worry. All you need is an interest in starting your musical education. If you already play guitar, why not build on your techniques? Guitar 1 is a two-segment course that introduces the basics of music and guitar. Students will be guided by Carlos and Ariel as they learn to play guitar and learn about music notation, musical styles, simple and full-strum chords, foundational music literacy and theory, and major scales. To get started, be sure to have a playable six-string guitar and a device capable of recording a video, including audio, to submit work to the teacher. Grab your guitar and get ready to jam.
This course is a Performing Fine Arts credit to meet the art requirement for high school graduation.
Law Studies:
How do law and the U.S. legal system affect your daily life? In this course, you will examine aspects of the foundations of the U.S. legal system as well as different types of law including civil, criminal, family, and consumer law. You will analyze key principles underlying law such as justice and how the state and federal court systems work to fulfill these principles. This course provides elective credit.

Meteorology Honors:
This interdisciplinary science course covers the fundamentals of meteorology, emphasizing the physical and chemical processes that control Earth’s weather and climate. Course topics include solar energy, atmospheric and oceanic movement, and energy transfer. Students will study and practice weather prediction using technology, data and models. In addition, students will learn the forces behind the formation of severe weather events. The course will cover the history of Earth’s climate and the practices and tools used to study meteorology as well as the forces behind fluctuations in the Earth’s weather and climate over time such as Milankovitch Cycles, and ice ages.
Music of the World:
Get ready to elevate your music knowledge to the next level. In this course, you will learn about Global musical traditions as you explore the function of music in a multitude of cultures. You will examine the fundamentals, sound, and structure of music to understand how music is representative of the culture it was created in. This course provides elective credit and fulfills a performing/fine art requirement for high school graduation.
Parenting Skills:
What is the best way to care for children and teach them self-confidence and a sense of responsibility? The process of parenting involves more than having a child and providing food and shelter. In this course, students learn what to prepare for, what to expect, and what vital steps parents can take to create the best environment for their children.
Parenting roles and responsibilities, nurturing and protective environments for children, positive parenting strategies, and effective communication in parent/child relationships are some of the topics covered in this course. In addition, students get to know some careers and resources available that support families as well as debunking common parenting myths. Get started today and learn about the skills parents need to raise healthy and productive kids.
Peer Counseling 1:
This course takes students on an inspiring “Superhero” journey where they develop confidence, build pride in their culture, achieve their goals, and help their peers succeed. Students learn how to take action to improve their own lives, manage their time, and resolve conflict by considering differences in personality. Along the way, students are coached by Mawi Asgedom, a former ELL (English Language Learner) student who earned a scholarship to Harvard and is now a student leadership expert who has trained over 1,000,000 students.
Personal Financial Literacy:

This course does not meet the Florida graduation requirement.
Learn one of life’s most important lessons - how to make sound financial decisions. In this course, you will learn financial decision-making skills using real-life scenarios. This course will teach the skills and knowledge you need to become a wise consumer, saver, investor, user of credit, and money manager. Psychology 1:
The human brain is fascinating. Where do thoughts and memories come from? What are emotions? And why do we behave the way we do? This course incorporates reading and analysis of literary and informational selections to develop critical and close reading skills and help prepare students for the demands of college and careers. Students will closely read and analyze a variety of texts and utilize online resources, including but not limited to, SAT preparatory resources through College Board.

Social Media 1:
Pre-Requisites: None but course is recommended for students over the age of 13.
This course won’t teach you how to use Facebook, the proper way to use a hashtag, or how to get more Instagram followers. (We trust that you’re an expert on all those things already.) What this course will teach you is that the world of Social Media revolves around you – your actions, your decisions, and your interests. You will examine how Social Media has evolved. You will understand how you can find authenticity and truth within an online world where you can “be” anyone. And you will learn how your digital footprint makes a bigger impression than your physical one. You will also discover that your voice is important. You’re not only a reader – you’re a writer. You don’t just follow the news – you report it as a citizen journalist. And you don’t just gather information – you crowdsource it. The future of Social Media is yours to define…so how will you use it to make a difference?
Theatre, Cinema, & Film Production
Lights, camera, action!
In Theatre, Cinema, and Film Production, students explore the elements of theatre and cinematic techniques used by those who create performance productions. Students compare the elements in theatre and film that serve the story and articulate the theme. Students also reflect on the historical and cultural influences on productions and how those influences affect audiences. This course offers a detailed view of the creative, performance, and technical operations of theatre and film. Theatre, Cinema, and Film Production provides an elective credit and fulfills the performing/fine art requirement for high school graduation.
Vocal Techniques:
This class is designed for students with varying vocal/choral experience to focus on the development of musical and technical skills on a specific voice through warm-ups, scales, and selected music literature. Through problem-solving, critical thinking, and reflection, students develop the physical and cognitive skills to be more disciplined performers. Performances may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals.
Peer Counseling 2:
Increase your confidence and build your social skills as you learn how to overcome many of the toughest challenges teens face. Discover how your “super-charged” teen brain really works, so you can make better decisions, have more fun, and achieve more. Learn how to conquer peer pressure, social anxiety, and the unnecessary risks that can derail your future. By the end of your training, you will have new power to direct your own life and lead your classmates.
