After you registered your child with FLVS, you should have received an
automated email including your child’s username. You will also use the password that you created during the registration process. (If you forgot your
password, go to www.flvs.net. You can reset it by clicking on “Forgot Password”.)
Do I have to complete the Onboarding Scavenger Hunt?
Yes. This activity was designed to help you and your child navigate our website
and learn where to find lessons, assignments, how to submit work, etc. It is very important that you read through this information before getting started in the coursework. Please click HERE to access the Onboarding Scavenger Hunt.
How “flexible” is the FLVS Flex program?
Our program is flexible because it allows your family to work at the times that
best meet your needs. You may choose to work on the lessons with
your child in the morning or maybe the evening is best. You may choose to work on one subject per day (for example, Monday is Language Arts day, Tuesday is Math day, etc) or you may want to do a little bit of everything every day. It is important to remember to
plan your week based on the FLIPBOOK WEEKLY PLANNER. At least 2-
4 assignments (depending on the course) are expected to be submitted to your teacher for each course every week. Our FLVS Work Policy states that students must submit assignments every week, or every 7 days, in each of the courses enrolled. That means that if you submit your weekly Math assignments on Tuesday, the next math assignments for the week are due by the following
Tuesday. It is best practice to keep a calendar near your computer and jot down when you submit an assignment. That way, you will always remember when your next weekly assignments are due.
How do I communicate with my teacher?
Teachers will reach out regularly. Please make sure to return calls and texts within 48 hours and check email regularly. This does not mean that you have to wait for your teacher to reach out to you. You may reach out to your teacher anytime via phone, email, and text.
How do I know what lessons and assignments to complete?
The Flipbook Weekly Planner lists the “Lessons to Read” (this is the meat of the
curriculum) and assignments (printables/computer-based assessments) to submit every week. The required assignments are listed in the “Submit to My Grades” box. Please note that “Instructional Resources” are extra practice and are not required to submit. You will want to access the flipbook at the beginning of every week to plan your daily lessons and assignments. It is best practice to print all required worksheets (found in the “Submit to My Grades” section of the flipbook) at the beginning of the week so that you have them ready to go throughout the week. Click HERE to access some how to resources to help navigate your courses.
What is a “portfolio” and what should I put in it?
Most school districts require home school students to keep a portfolio of their
assignments, which will serve as work evidence that your child completed the grade level with FLVS. It is best practice to keep all worksheets that your child completes for each course in a portfolio (binder, file folder) so that you have the evidence ready if/when your school district asks for it at the end of the school
year. You will also be able to print your child’s semester transcripts once a final grade is issued, which you will add to your child’s portfolio.
Can my student work independently on lessons and assignments?
Especially in the beginning, no. Students need a lot of support with the curriculum, no matter how mature or independent they may seem. Home
educators should plan a daily work routine that allows them time to sit with their student and read through the module lessons and activities WITH their child. At this age, it is the home educator’s responsibility to be sure their child completes the assignments properly and submit the work to their child’s gradebook. With that being said, ALL student work must be completed in the student’s own handwriting according the FLVS academic honesty policy. If you feel that we may not understand what has been written, you may make a note above or below the student’s work stating what has been written. Please check out additional support and resources under the Resources and How to Videos button on your course page for extra support with writing. We appreciate your commitment to your child’s education as we embark on this home school learning adventure together! Learn more about how to submit assignments HERE.
What happens if I don’t submit my child’s assignments?
All students are expected to submit 2-4 assignments for each course every
week, based on the Flipbook Weekly Planner. This is called “showing weekly
progress”. You can think of this like a traditional school. If Johnny is absent from school for a week, he would miss the lessons taught in the classroom and the teacher will be contacting the family to make sure he is OK. The same works in
virtual school. Teachers do not know how much the students are learning unless they are consistently submitting weekly assignments to us. If a student does not submit their weekly assignments, this is considered an absence. The teacher will contact the parent to check in and remind them to submit the assignments for the week. An extended, unexcused absence (2 or more weeks without submitting weekly assignments) may result in a withdrawal from the program.
Of course, there are many special circumstances and reasons for absences. It is of high importance that you always communicate with your teacher if your student needs more time to complete the assignments, if your student is sick or if your family takes a vacation. FLVS teachers are happy to work with each family’s individual needs.
When is live class time offered?
Class Time is offered every Tuesday and Thursday morning.
You may select a class time session based on the current
module that your student is working in. You will want to view our Class Time Calendar in advance to plan your attendance (different modules are offered on different days). Instructors teach lessons on a rotating schedule, so you will have the benefit of working with more than one teacher during live class time
sessions.Click HERE for information about Zoom. After your child has attended a live class time, you may log the attendance in that subject-area gradebook. Your child can receive credit for attending 2 Class Times per course each semester. These are counted as extra credit by submitting in the collaboration assignment in the gradebook.
What is a DBA and when will my child complete one?
DBA stands for Discussion Based Assessment. These are required assessments that will be completed with the teacher. They are designed to be stress-free and engaging, a simple “snap-shot” of what the students have been learning. DBAs should take no longer than 10-15 minutes, depending on how many subjects we need to cover. Instructors monitor every student’s progress and will reach out to each family when they are ready to complete a DBA, but if you notice in the gradebook that it is time to complete your DBA you may reach out to your teacher as well.
What are the “Collaboration” and “Enrichment” Assessments in my child’s gradebook?
Collaboration Assessments is attendance to our live class time sessions. Students are encouraged to attend at least two live class times per semester. Enrichment Assessments can be a third class time session, the scavenger hunt, or an “extra” assignment/activity that the student completes for that course. There are many resources and opportunities for activities that will fulfill the enrichment assessment. You can find them on the far right side of the flipbook/ weekly planner.
Where can I find the passwords for the module assessments?
All passwords (needed to access module assessments) are listed on the Flipbook
Weekly Planner. Simply “flip” to the proper week and see the password written in red.
Some assignments require that your child submit an audio attachment. Please
click HERE for directions on how to create a recording.
What is an “interactive notebook”?
You will notice that the module lessons refer to an “interactive notebook”. This is
simply a notebook (composition book, spiral notebook) that a student should keep to jot down notes and answer questions throughout the lesson. This notebook will not need to be submitted to the teacher. It is best practice to keep one interactive notebook for each course.
Click HERE for a general supply list. These items are recommended, but not required. You will also want to stock up on printer paper and ink, as there are many printable worksheets your child will need to complete and submit for a grade. If for some reason you are unable to print, you may hand write and submit work on notebook paper as long as the work is completed in the student’s handwriting.
